Trying to Get Pregnant

Sex during period?

Hi all! This is my first post in this board. We just starting TTC this past month. Well, my period never came, but I didnt get a + either. After my period was 2 weeks late, and I had severe cramping, I went to my doctor for a workup. (About 4 years ago I had surgery to have some cysts removed, it also took us about 15 months to get pregnant with my LO. After a year we found out that I wasn't ovulating every cycle, and was put on clomid, got pregnant with him the 2nd cycle on that.) Anyway, my doctor said that he definitely thought I had some big cysts again and had me get an ultrasound.

Well, this morning I woke up with my period. But then I got a call from the nurse who said that I had a ruptured cyst on my right ovary, which was probably causing the pain. She also said that there was follicle that was going to be released today or tomorrow and I would ovulate, so I would have my period in about two weeks. I told her that I got my period this morning and she just said that the doctor wants me to get another ultrasound in 10 days and for a followup appointment with him then.

I guess I'm wondering...do you think that I'm really going to/have ovulated? Would it even be worth it to try to have sex right now with my period? Is it possible to get pregnant if you have sex during your period, or would we have needed to have sex before I started for that to be a possibility?

(also, YES I have been charting but I do it on an app I have on my phone so I don' thave a FF chart. I haven't really noticed any major changes in temp this cycle.)

Re: Sex during period?

  • It is very unlikely you will get pregnant from having sex while on you're period. Not impossible, but very unlikely. Are you on Clomid now and are they doing any follow up b/w? And this is going to sound like a dumb question but, are you sure it's your period? Full on flow requiring a tampon/pad? I would think if your doctor felt you were about to O and you got your period instead they would want to see you,but thats just me being paranoid.

  • It doesn't really sound like your doctors have a good idea of what is going on.  Unless they did bloodwork to check your estrogen and LH levels, they can't really tell if you are about to O based on what looks like a follie on u/s.

THANK YOU! I thought the same thing...that they should see me right away. But she said that it wasn't necessary so I don't know what to do. Yes it is my period, full flow with tampons.
I'm not on Clomid now. From the charting I've been doing I have been ovulating so we were just going to wait a while and see what happens to determine if additional treatment is necessary or if it might happen on it's own this time.
I also figured that it would be highly unlikely to get pregnant if we had sex now, but I thought it was worth a try to ask what you think! I'm worried that not ovulating this cycle may mean that I'm on the path to not ovulating on my own again...and I would really like to get pregnant without having to do that (and all of the appointments/monitoring that goes along with it!) if at all possible.

Thank you for this! I was confused and questioned it as well seeing as I did get my period today. And nope, they didn't do any bloodwork, so I guess I'll just ride it out and see what they see with my ultrasound in a week and a half and hope I ovulated next cycle.
