What would you get her? (also a vent)

SIL and BIL are exspecting thier first child in Febuary and the baby shower is this weekend. I personally feel like it is way to soon but whatever it isn't me. SIL mentioned when I was pg that she doesn't like little boys in gender neutral clothing, so I don't want to get her clothing since she doesn't know what she is having. They don't have much on the registry either that is in our price range, most of it is $150+. So my options are the boppy and covers, a pack or two or the 5 diffrent kinds of bottles on there or something she didn't register for.

ETA: We want to spend around $50 and suggestions are 100% welcome!

  • I would get her something in your price range that you found to be an "essential" baby item or something really helpful. Maybe like a bouncy seat or something?

Give a gift receipt, of course. But I think if it comes with a recommendation that it is something you liked when R was little, that she might like it too.

  • What about making a gift basket type thing with (for example) your favorite baby shampoo, lotion, diaper cream, etc.

Or Sophie the giraffe (or some other type of toy you and Riley really like) and a couple of your fav books

  • What about a baby bath tub & some soaps/lotions/diaper creams?  I would assume a bath tub is on a registry for a first timer, but you mentioned it really only had items that were 150 +.

Does seem a little strange to have a shower so soon, but maybe they were trying to take into account the limited time avaialble with the holidays in Nov, Dec, & Jan.

This reminds me, I've got to get something for a shower.

I know this is why they are doing it early. Plus they live OOT and so this is the shower for his side of the family who lives here. But I seriously had nightmares last week around thier first u/s at 13 weeks, I had so much anxiety for them. After all DH and I didn't tell them I was pg till 14w and here they are 15/16 and we are doing a shower, it just made me so nervous. Plus it is really hard to buy them a gift when they don't know what they want.

  • That is CRAZY early for a shower but whatever.  I"d get them a pack of aden&anais swaddle blankets and call it a day if it were me.  The blankets are beautiful, you can get several for under $50 if you shop well and they were essential tools for us and still are.  DS recently discovered them in his closet and insists on sleeping with his baby blankets every day. :)
  • I would just get her a gift card and be done with it.
  • swaddle blanket or stuffed animal or always a pack of newborn diapers, put a basket/box together. Bottle brushes, thermometer, nose syringe, boogie wipes, clothes hangers in white, butt paste or cream of some sort, pacifier, mirror for car, cart/high chair cover. Someone gave me a set of clay handprint kits, for 1 through 5 years. Books!!!! (big brown bear, cat in the hat, board books)

What did I miss? Just get a few of these things and put it together in a storage basket or something that can be used. I got 2 of these type things, baskets with stuff in them and I still use the baskets.

    Good luck

    Kristin

    Great Idea!!!

  • In this situation I would do this:

    1. get a gift-card to a baby store they registered with (or Target if all else fails).

    2. get an item (or two) that you think are especially useful things to have for baby that they DIDN'T register for, but you know they'll need.

...and have the two add up to your spending limit.

  • One of my favorite baby shower gifts was a basket filled with gripe water, motrin, tylenol (infant kind of course), mylicon, triple paste butt cream, aquaphor, baby sunscreen, etc.  Those things are super useful but I totally wouldn't have thought to buy them myself.

I like this idea and maybe throw in a few things she may need for breastfeeding (Lanolin cream, gel pads, etc.)

Does she need a nursing cover?

  • Things under $50 that I would get:

    A stretchy wrap

A swaddling blanket that is at least 42x42

    Cloth diapers

Basket with Nosefrida, Gripe Water, Rescue Remedy spray, and an infant massage book

Ohh I like this idea!  I don't think I will put the nursing stuff in. She registered for 5 diffrent types of bottles so I doubt she is BFing.

LOL! She probably doesn't need that then :)

  • My go-to baby shower gift is Halo Sleepsack Swaddles.  You could add those to your basket of goodies.
