3 weeks old & awful gas! Help!!!

My LO is 3 weeks old and has awful gas pains.  She will take a bottle, burp numerous times throughout, and will be fine for about 45 minutes post bottle.  Then all of a sudden her belly gets so hard, she screams in pain while trying to pass gas and can't get comfortable.  We tried massage, bicycle legs,(even a teaspoon of prune juice in a few bottles) and now the dr has recommended Mylocan drops.  We started them earlier today and she seems worse.  When i asked the dr about possibly a formula change ( we are currently on Similac Advanced) I was told that unless she is constipated or vomiting while feeding then the formula is fine.

I am at my wits end!  Any suggestions???

  • Sounds like she is uncomfortable, my kids did not do well on Similac Advance. I personally would try a new formula like Gentlease or Similac sensitive and see if her symptoms improve.

  • We switched from similac advance to similac sensitive. It actually helped a little. Also gripe water helped a little. The drops didn't do anything for us either.

I HATE BABY GAS! Poor things. :-(

His stomach doesn't get all hard anymore like on the similac advance.

    Good luck!

  • I had the exact same problem, plus my little guy was staying constipated. We switched from Similac Advanced to Similac Sensitive and it really helped with the constipation. He is still gassy from time to time so we give him gripe water as needed. I would really think again about switching the formula.

  • It sounds like you need to change formulas.

We are dealing with major gas and are switching from Similac Sensitive to Enfamil Gentlease per our Pediatrician's recommendation.

Just remember that if you change formula, it can take up to 5-7 days before you notice a change.

  • Agree with PP - you should switch the formula. Our DD had gas issues and we switched to Similac Sensitive and she seems much, much better. She only receives about 1 or 2 bottles of formula a day - the rest of the time she BFs. I also gave up dairy in case that was bothering her. I just thought I'd mention it in case you are BFing also - dairy in mom's diet can be problematic for DC.
  • We noticed problems w/ gas around 2-2.5 weeks.  Dr. recommended not switching formula either.  So we switched bottles (from Dr. Browns to Ventaire), started gas drops (which I think took a couple of uses/days to fully notice a difference) and make sure to do bicycle kicks and put pressure on DD belly as soon as she starts to tighten up (it seemed like if we didn't catch it early, it was much tougher to get through for LO).  It seems to definitely be helping.  I also put LO on her belly, across my chest and hold her (pretty close/tight), works like a charm for some reason, GL!

  • We went thru the same thing around that time and my pedi recommended switching to Enfamil Gentlease and haven't had a problem since!  DS also wasn't vomiting or constipated, just showing the same symptoms as your LO.  Our pedi also didn't recommend any gas medications, just the formula switch.
  • my 3 week old was having bad gas problems too. He was spitting up a lot all of a sudden as well. I called the DR yesterday. She said to switch formulas. We were using Enfamil Premium. I am now using Similac Sensitive.  She said Enfamil Gentlease would be fine, too. She didn't say anything about gas medicine. She said to monitor how the new formula works. If the problem doesn't improve, I may have to switch to a soy based formula.
  • thanks everyone....we are trying the Similac Sensitive.  Hope it helps!
