wwyd? re:breast cancer

If you had prevalent breast cancer in your family, and you tested positive for the BRCA gene, would you consider elective masectomy or removal of breast tissue? This issue was on world news tonight last night, and recent research findings are revealing that it is effective in prevention.  My mother passed away at 49 from breast cancer, and both of her grandmother's died from breast cancer.  I have not tested for the gene yet, and regardless of whether I carry it or not, I am seriously considering doing this eventually.  I discussed it with my mom's oncologist many times.  If it can potentially save my life, then it will be done for sure.  What are your thoughts if you are in a similar situation?

This research also holds true for ovarian cancer as well.

  • I probably would have elcted for it.

I had breast cancer while I was pregnant.  I had a lumpectomy while I was 5 months pregnant and I just had another one two months ago.  I suffer from phyllodes tumors and it does not repond to chemotheropy or radiation.

If they come back I'm opting for the masectomy.

I'm grateful I am in remission.

  • I would have the surgery. There wouldnt be any hesitation on my part.  I lost a cousin, she was 38, to breast cancer about 2 years ago.  It run rampant on her mother's side of the family and two of her mother's sisters as well as her maternal grandmother died from breast cancer. Her younger sister, who is my age, 35, elected to have a masectomy. There was no hesitation on her part.  In each of the above situations, it started out as breast cancer and quickly spread to other areas. Very sad situation.

Wow! I'm glad to hear you are in remission. I'm sure you are fairly young, and that has got to be scary.  I am 28, and I will start getting mammograms when I turn 30.  It just scares me to death.  I don't want my DD's to ever have to go through what I went through with my mom at such a young age.  I hope everything works out and you stay in remission.

Thanks, I feel great! I'm sorry you lost your mother at such a young age.  I'm 34 and that was my big fear, that i wouldn't live to raise them. Don't hesitate to get any surgery you ever need but always get a second opinion.

  • I have spoke with my doctor about this already. Ideally, I would like to get a double masectomy and then I believe they can do recontructive surgery at the same time...It may sound superficial but I would miss my breasts way too much.
  • Ugh - I'm 25 and I just had this conversation with my doctor. She suggested that If I'm done having children that I should have the test done now, and that I need to have it done by the time I'm 30. Both of my grandmother's had breast cancer along with my first cousin and my great aunt. My first cousin and my grandmother were both diagnosed while in their 30s. This is on my fathers side.. on my mothers side my grandmother and her sister were in there 50s-60s. My great aunt had ovarian cancer as well, and my cousin had a couple of scares that thankfully turned out to be nothing. If having the surgery means saving my life I will do it. However I'm not happy about it as I'm sure everyone in that position would be.

This may sound crazy but I also feel like I'm on a clock as far as having more children goes. Now is not the right time for DH and I to be having anymore, but we did want to have one or two more later on in life. I guess we will just have to wait and see..
