Diaper bags

I haven't put much thought into what diaper bag I will want, but a previous post got me looking into it. They all seem pretty expensive.

So, what diaper bag will you use and/or how much are you planning on spending on it?

Re: Diaper bags

  • My SIL bought me a Coach diaper bag from the outlet store. I am guessing it was around $150. If she wouldn't have bought me one, I would have bought one for myself. I figured it will basically be my purse for awhile so I wouldn't mind spending a little bit more to get what I want.

  • To be honest, I never spent more than $40 on a diaper bag.  I just do not see the point.  We went through several diaper bags with DD, and I would not have wanted to spend a ton of money on them each time I had to purchase a new one.

  • i'm having a terrible time finding one i like. i like really cute / trendy handbags, so i'm trying to find a diaper bag like that. i also don't want to pay a fortune. at this point i think i'm just going to use a large purse or a travel bag.

  • After looking at a few online and in stores, I think we like the backpack style. This way, it's roomy and DH would carry it as well because it's not like a purse. I think we will get this one-

It's roomier than it looks in that picture, has tons of pockets, and I love the sling style so I can wear it that way instead of on one shoulder.

If we don't get that one, we'll probably get this one. It's really nice too.

Personally, I want to pay around $40 or less. I plan to use a coupon for our purchase.

  • I LOVE the Petunia Pickle Bottom bags!!  The one I like runs about 150.00. My DH would FLIP if he knew how much I wanted to spend on one!  In a way I'm not sure why I would need such an expensive bag, on the other I REALLY WANT IT!!!

  • I'm completely obsessed with birds right now (baby's room will have a vintage bird theme) so when I found this line of diaper bags on Amazon.com, I squealed with glee and registered for one:

     https://www.amazon.com/Kalencom-Eleanors-Collection-Turquoise-Nursery/dp/B001V62Y7Y/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1W6HA8UK4J09F&colid=XX03008H8H6I

I wouldn't spend more on a diaper bag than I'd spend on a high quality backpack (about $60-$70, depending on sturdiness, options, etc.) I would say try to go for something that's really well constructed and will take a possible beating. I might register for a second bag, and have a big one for all day trips, and a small one for quick grocery store runs.

I was planning on getting a nicer one because I will probably be using it as my purse for a while as well. RHitch, this is probably a stupid, naive FTM question but why did you go through several diaper bags? If I'm going to go through several I don't want to spend a ton.

  • Speaking of getting a smaller bag for quick trips-ladies, make sure to watch the clearance racks! Last weekend, I found this bag at Target marked down to just $13. :)

  • I bought one on ebay and spent $100...it's Kate Spade bag, solid black and retails for $300.

I figure DH can deal with it since I at least bought it used!

  • I'm pretty obsessed with Vera Bradley so I got my diaper bag from there. They usually retail for $97 but I got an older pattern for $60 and then paid $10 for shipping. DH will have to find one he is willing to carry or convert an old schoolbag or something.

  • $0. We recieved free golf bags as part of a goody bag at a fundraiser that are plain black, have a comfy strap and are the right size--not too big, not too small. We have two of them, so a primary bag and a backup.
  • I'm getting this Marc by Marc Jacobs diaper bag -$278

Bag number 1: This was our most expensive bag (approximately $150).  This bag was a baby shower gift.  We loved it, and it was very functional, but we had to replace it when DD was 3 months because a bottle leaked all over the bottom.  Of course it was a mistake, but it smelled and instead of washing the bag, I felt as if it was more sanitary to throw it away.

Bag number 2: We purchased another diaper bag similar to the first one but cheaper.  This bag was used at the sitters house, when we went to church, and for other everyday errands.  DD actually puked all over this bag one day (she got car sick), so needless to say, this one was eventually tossed too.  I did wash this one, but I couldn?t get the puke stain out of it.

Bag number 3: This was purchased at the same time as bag # 2.  This one was huge because it was used for travel and overnight stay.  Most of my family lives an hour or so away, so when we visit, we usually stay all day.  I needed a bag that would hold 8-10 hours worth of stuff (formula, diapers, wipes, changing pad, clothes, etc?).  This is also the bag DD used when she stayed overnight at my mom?s house.

Bag number 4: This was actually a toddler bag.  When DD got older, we did not need the huge bag anymore because she was not using as many diapers, she was off of formula, and we didn?t need to change her clothes as often.  This is also the bag we used to go to the zoo, amusement parks, etc.. because it was small and it was a backpack.

  • I really cannot see spending a ton of money on something I will be putting dirty diapers in.  I prefer function over trend, so I am looking at the Skip Hop Duo Deluxe
  • I have 3 diaper bags, I have a Coach, a PPB boxy backpack and another PPB. I have been using 2 of those bags for 18 months and they are both still in like new condition, they have held up extremely well and I think they were worth the money.
  • I'm debating between the Skip Hop Studio and a Coach bag from the outlets.  Both feel like a splurge, but I have to carry it around every day in place of my beloved coach purses, so ultimately, I'll make sure to get something I really like.

OMG, I am so jealous!  I LOVE Marc Jacobs bags!  I have a small collection, but they are hard to come by here!  Whenever DH goes to Chicago I have him pick me one up!

DH bought me a Coach diaper bag.  But, I am thinking I am going to try to find ^ one now, lol!

  • Just a suggestion, but it is not recommended to use your diaper bag as your purse. I know it means carrying around two bags, but a diaper bag is more likely to be left somewhere over a purse. I registered for these ones, one for me and one for DH, I may also get a Vera Bradley one, because I too have a Vera obsession.

I don't know what the protocol is, but I will be using CD's, so even though they go in a small wet bag, that wet bag with dirty diapers in it goes into the diaper bag.

Even if you use disposables, poopsplosion clothes will go in it and there is a good chance that spilled breast milk will end up in it =)

Me too! I will be getting my diaper bags from there as well. I love the purple paisley and I think I will get a black microfiber one too.

I don't know about cera, but I will have a wet bag for dirty diapers inside the diaper bag because I will be using cloth diapers.

    see my previous response =)

Even though my CD's will be going into a wet bag, that wet bag will still be going into my diaper bag, therefore I will have dirty dipes in my diaper bag

  • I bought an $18 Jeep diaper bag from walmart because had a huge main pocket and CD's take up a lot of room in a diaper bag. I'm just going to get a large backpack for the two kiddos now.

This exactly.  Except it was my sister who bought it for me.

  • I bought the JJ Cole Mode Tote Bag in gray flora.... here's a link to it...

     I spent about $100 (CAN)

  • This Ju-Ju-Be bag is what I am currently obsessed with.  I need something big with two kids plus all my crap.  I am hoping DH will get it for me, but if not I am prepared to sell my barely used Coach diaper bag and whatever else I need to to come up with the money.
