  GD babies tend to be bigger and therefore have a higher incidence of shoulder distocia (their shoulders get stuck when they are coming out).  A lot of OB's will induce early in order to avoid the risk and make sure the baby isn't too big.  But there is some controversy about it.

  I would have to have some other complications beyond a potential big baby before inducing at 38 weeks.  But then, my first was 9 lbs and that was without GD, so maybe my viewpoint is biased.

  GD puts you at a much higher risk for pre-e, so that could be a reason.  Also, GD can make larger babies.  Her baby my be big enough to be considered healthy.  Plus, you are full term at 37 weeks, so she's not being induced "early".

  No, they don't always induce.  I wasn't induced with either pregnancy (obv. not with this one, but I got to 39.5 weeks with Henry).  Even when the Sequel was measuring big and they mentioned induction at my last appt, I told them no.  So it's definitely posssible to push back.

  Your poor friend!  Sounds like that baby just isn't ready to make his/her appearance.

  Hi, I'm just a lurker, but I was induced due to GD so I thought I'd chime in

  I think every doctor has their own ideas about inducing early for GD patients. My doctor was worried about my placenta failing and a big baby, because even with daily insulin injections my numbers were a tad high, so he encouraged induction at 39 weeks. If I hadn't been on insulin, or had my blood sugar been more stable, they probably would have let me go until 41 weeks, which is their standard for inducing at their practice.

  Nest time, I'll fight harder to let the baby come on it's own, so long as we're both healthy. My induction experience. It started at 38 weeks, 6 days, and after two cervidals (sp?), two days of pitocin, and narrowly avoiding a c-section my little girl was born at 39 weeks, 2 days.

  They don't always induce. My doctor was going to let me go to 41 weeks before inducing. GD babies tend to be bigger, but it isn't always the case. DS was born right at 40 weeks (I went into labor on my own) and was only 6 lbs 4 oz when he was born.

  if the GD is controlled with diet, meds, or insulin, and the baby is a normal weight (monitored thru frequent growth u/s's near the end), I wouldn't think there was much risk - My docs never had much concern other than baby's size (which wasn't an issue in that she was 6 pounds).    I was induced @ 39w for b/p, swelling, and pre-e symptoms.

  I hope her LO comes out soon. I just feel badly that it's already been this long & clearly that little guy just doesn't want to make an appearance!

  I would assume she's being induced with cervadil. I was induced with cervadil and they warned me that it would take days. After about 40 hours of cervadil I started having contractions. She's probably spent the past couple of days in bed being monitored, but not in labor.

  I would assume she's being induced with a cervical ripener (Cervadil, Prostin, or cytotec). It doesn't mean she's "in labor," and it can take days/several doses sometimes.

  There's a lot that goes into a GD induction. I had GD. I was diet controlled, so I didn't need medication. Having the background like I do, I was a little more aware of what the magic things meant for an induction earlier than post-dates.

  Most OBs won't let you go past 40 weeks with GD b/c of further complications...even if you don't have any other ones in the pregnancy. I pushed for an induction no earlier than 40 weeks. I had stable blood sugars, T & I both measured well throughout the pregnancy, and I had no further risk factors. I also was not showing any signs of pre-ecclampsia.

  My OB was ok with this, but didn't want me delivering beyond 40.3 due to risks of deteriorating placenta.I really wanted a few more days, but due to other circumstances, I was induced @ 40.0 weeks. I was apparently ripe enough b/c I was in early labor when I got there.

  High-risk L&D nurse...If in doubt, go to triage!
