1st Trimester

Beautiful nails, what a waste

So, my awesome awesome awesome prenatal vitamins are making my nails super long and super thick. So, what do woman do with long thick nails? They give themselves french manicures, of course. But I am reading every where about how bad nail polish is for the baby and blah blah blah...especially in the first trimester. So, I am wondering: is the big hype over the fumes, or the actual chemicals going into the skin/nails. And if it's just the fumes, if cover our mouths & nose (with a mask or a shirt) will that be enough to avoid any potential harm?

  •  The chemicals from the nail polish don't actually get absorbed through your nail bed into the blood steam. The only thing  you may want to limit is your exposure to the fumes. I just wouldnt get your nails done every week and spend 2+ hours in the salon. Moderation.

I still get my nails done every 2 weeks, just make sure the area is well ventilated and you'll be fine.

  • hmmm I don't know. I've never heard anything about not being able to use nail polish. I probably wouldn't go to a nail salon where you're breathing in a ton of fumes, but I think giving yourself a french manicure should be just fine.

  • You know, all of the things I have read on this didn't specify if they were referring to a salon or in general. But I wasn't referring to a salon. I do my nails at home...and my tips are chipping, so I need a fresh coat.

  • Most nail polishes are now B3 Free so they're fine to use. Just don't lock yourself in the bathroom to paint them or you'll probably get a buzz. I still paint my nails at least once a week (would be more, but the fatigue makes it hard for me to wait for them to dry before falling asleep on the couch).

  • I remember when I was 6 months pregnant with my son I had gotten my nails done for my wedding. I almost passed out 2 times in the salon. And i was the only person in there and the doors were open.  Lets just say I wont be getting them done in the next 9 months.
  • I have power wraps and have been getting them done for years.  Pregnacy will not change this.  Go get your nails done.

Oh my goodness, I never even thought about the fumes in the salon! I have acrylics (I swear they don't look cheap!) but it looks like I might need to schedule a soak-off. Boo. :(

I had solar nails and had to get rid of them too. Now, I'm just patiently waiting for the thin, breakable ends to grow out so I can get to these amazing, thick nails from the prenatals that everyone is talking about. Grow, nails, grow!
