Thoughts on castor oil?

Did anybody use castor oil to induce labor? I have had a lot of people recommend it lately and it seems a bit scary. Does anyone recommend it or definitely not recommend it? TIA!

Re: Thoughts on castor oil?

  • my SIL used it for both of her pregnancies, It worked both times but your body has to be ready to go into labor, otherwise you'll just get a wicked case of the craps. I have also heard that it can make your LO poop in the womb which can lead to them swallowing or inhaling it. (correct me if im wrong )

  • You're going to go into labor when your body to ready to do so, no matter what you try. But I've heard castor oil is disgusting! That would be the last thing I would try.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again:

The only thing worse than being overdue is being overdue and having diarrhea.  Don't do it.

  • I would not recommend it unless you were over due. I used it at 41 weeks 3 days and had DS the next day. Also FWIW it did not make me go to the bathroom more than once a few hours after.

  • I tried it twice and it didn't work. When I finally did go into labor though, they had to break my water and it was totally clear, so it didn't make my LO have a BM. Honestly, it wasn't that bad of an experience, definitely not as bad as I expected it to be. If you talk to your Dr./MW about it and get their consent and you're overdue, I'd say it doesn't hurt to try...
