I know I've seen this while lurking here, but not I can't find the info when I need it...
LO eats on one side per feeding. I would like to start pumping regularly to build my freezer stash before returning to work. So the question is: when/ which side to pump? (I don't recall what I did with LO#1, but I know I didn't build up enough of a stash.)
I assume right after the first AM feeding is best, but do I pump the side he doesn't eat from? That makes me nervous about not having enough milk on that side for the next feeding. And he eats 6x in a 24hr period (every 3 hrs during the day and every 5-6 hrs at night), so I would be pumping the same side every morning, which seems like a bad idea (maybe I should pump twice per day?).
So, any advice or ideas would be appreciated! TIA
Re: ? re: One sided feeder and building freezer stash
I would recommend (in my short experience with this...) pumping both sides after your AM feeding. 3 hours is a long time to fill back up. If you are really worried you could not pump until dry (you will learn now long it takes for that to happen, so you could shorten your pumping time). But in reality remember supply/demand, so your body should adjust to turn around more bm quickly. Also, when this has happened to me, b/c my DD would sometimes nurse sooner than expected (she's doing every hour sometimes...) I would just give her the bottle of what I just pumped. Not sure if you are giving bottles just yet. You could throw in a pumping session at some point, but just depends on how much stash you want. Doing one right before bed works for me so I don't wind up feeling engorged if DD sleeps longer. GL!
