Baby Names

Riley?

We just found out that we are having another little boy.  I really like the name Riley and thought it was masculine, but I am hearing of far more girls named Riley than boys.  So, first, wdyt of the name Riley, and, does a boy or girl initially come to mind.

Thanks.

Re: Riley?

  • Riley is too trendy for my tastes and seem very '90s' to me, but it also is all boy in my mind. I can't stand that people are using it for girls now.

And, on an unrelated note--and I apologize, because this is going to sound rude no matter how I ask it--why do you have your child's growth chart in your signature? That seems really weird, but I recognize I could be missing some unseen purpose to it. Just wondering: )

  • I think of a girl, but probably because I've only had female Riley's in my classes.
  • My BFF named her son Riley (he's 5 mos) so I think of boy.  I think nowadays, it is definitely unisex.  I've also seen girls spell it Rylie.  It's not my style because I prefer a more masculine name for a boy.

No offense taken.  Which the exception of a couple posts here and there I do not frequent the boards and haven't updated my siggy in over two years. DS is now 2 1/2. But to answer your question, one of the primary questions asked on the babies boards is/was how much did/does your dc weigh, so, at the time, it was extremely common to post weight at the early ages in your signature.  How's that for a long-winded explanation ;)

Thanks! I thought it might be something like that: ) I hadn't seen it before in signatures, but, then, I don't really frequent the baby boards: )

  • I used to really like Riley for a boy but then it turned into one of those cross over names. It is now so annoyingly popular for little girls I have begun to loathe it.

  • I always think of it as a boy's name even though I have a cousin who named her daugher Ryleigh.

  • I have a 19 year old brother named Riley Chase and I like it more as a boys name. I have a neice named Rylie but it wouldn't have been my first choice for a girl. Too masculine but not in a good way IMO.
  • I really like the name. Boy comes to mind first because about 10 years ago I had a boy dog we named Riley. I don't mind it for a girl though.

  • I think it's a cute name, but I think of girl when I hear it.

I know 4 people named Riley. The only boy is a 25 year old. The other 3 are little girls, so I definitely think it is a name that has become more common for girls.
  • I think boy but that's only because its a Twilight name now! (spoiler alert) Riley was the boy vampire recruited, by Victoria, to lead the vampire army in Eclipse.
  • Girl comes to my mind first and then my mom's golden retriever who is named Riley, lol.
  • Riley was my Irish FIL's middle name, so we wanted to incorporate it into DS2's name. One of the reasons we decided against using it as a first name was due to the fact that it is being used so frequently for girls these days. I love it as the traditional boy name, so I give a Yes for using it for your little boy! :)

Congrats on boy#2! Yay for brothers!

What is your other son's name if you don't mind sharing?

  • I like it for a boy, not for a girl, but like others mentioned it's pretty popular for girls now.
