TTC After a Loss

Whoever knows anything about progesterone - come in

First of all, good morning all! I'm back from a long camping weekend with NO technology = no Bump :( Missed everyone!

So I check my email this morning and my OB finally sent me my progesterone results from 2 weeks ago when I had a natural m/c. This result is so low, it looks pretty clear that I have a deficiency.....

The only thing he wasn't sure of is if I'm always deficient, or if the pregnancy caused the deficiency. I've suspected something was off w/ my hormones for the last 18 months as my cycles have been all whacked, so I'm not sure if I should supplement proactively?? I know I should talk to my dr but hate paying $100 to ask him a couple of questions since I have a high deductible health plan and paying out of pocket. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Ehhh, off to work. Have a good day everyone.

  • I had a very similar situation - I had crazy cycles for months after going off BC, which turned into an even bigger mess after my m/c. I suspected that my hormones were out of whack so I went to see a doctor who specializes in natural medicine. He put me on natural progesterone cream and it has helped me SO much! My skin cleared up, I'm less moody, and more importantly, my cycles are normal. I'd say do it, It's worth the $100.

  • Request 7dpo bloodwork...that will show if you do indeed have low progesterone.  There aren't any OTC P4 supplements, so you'd need a dr. to give you a script anyway.

Agreed.  Your progesterone level taken during a miscarriage doesn't indicate anything except that you were miscarrying.  A viable embryo actually signals the body to make more progesterone, so if the embryo isn't viable, your progesterone level will tend to be low.  Now, it could also be that your body doesn't make enough progesterone to sustain a pregnancy, but your results from two weeks ago don't necessarily say that.

Some doctors (including mine) don't even bother testing progesterone, but prescribe progesterone supplements b/c they can't hurt / might help.

I agree.  Low progestrone during a miscarriage just shows that you are miscarrying.  You dont' know if it was low and caused a miscarriage or whether it was just the result of the miscarriage.  7dpo bloodwork will give you a good indication if your body has a good O and makes enough progestrone.
