Using a spoon on their own?

How old was your LO when they started using a spoon on their own? DS really has had no interest in it... I always just give him finger food to eat because it's easier unless he's eating something off of my plate. Our highchair is in the living room because the dining room is the makeshift nursery for the one on the way for a couple of months so I guess I don't want him just flinging food all over the place, lol.

Just wondering if I should be pushing him to use it himself? He still doesn't even use plates because he will throw it after he is done eating. How did you ladies know they were ready?

Re: Using a spoon on their own?

  • Using a spoon has been really important to DD. She has been working on it for a couple of months, maybe since she was about 12 mo. She has just recently gotten good enough that I'll sometimes let her go it alone... and by that I mean she doesn't create too much of a mess and the spoon actually goes in her mouth. She still doesn't get that she needs to actually scoop food, not just put the spoon in and out of the dish.

Anyway, I think it's pretty early. And if you DS isn't even interested, I'd be grateful. It was a huge hassle because of the mess (or the tantrums if she didn't get her spoon). I think most kids pick it up on their own. Just wait for him to show interest.

  • She uses one.....poorly.

She'd like to use it better, but she doesn't. She does pretty good with this smaller ergonomic spoon that we have.

A few weeks ago she was eating with a fork. She couldn't actually stab the food with said for, so she put the pieces in her mouth with her hands and then put the fork in afterwards. Smart one she is.

  • Oh and also - I think it's early for her to be using one. She's just hates it when we feed her. Always has - silly kid wouldn't even eat purees because it required us to feed her.
  • E has just gotten the nack of it in the last month. She still misses a lot of the times. Usually when she has a spoon DH or I have a spoon too and feeding her something. That way we know she is getting something into her stomach.
  • She's been using a spoon and fork for about 2-3 months now. She's gotten a lot better but there were lots of messes in the beginning and I used to put the food on the spoon/fork, then she'd pick it up and put it in her mouth.

We've used a plate since about a year. I think it's important that they get used to "regular" eating manners, hence the place setting :)

OMG, this is my kid exactly!  She only did purees for a short time because she could not stand for us to feed her.  I can't feed her applesauce or yogurt because she refuses to be spoon-fed!  I can't wait for her to be skilled with the spoon!

DD does use the fork and is starting to get pretty good with it.  I started giving her the fork to practice with about 2 weeks ago.  DD is 15 mos old.

  • We started with utensils around 11 months but it wasn't until 14 months that she really used them and it wasn't until she was closer to 18 months that it wasn't a total mess-LOL.  Even now she's better with a spoon than a fork.  Right now she's pretty good with yogurt and other liquid-type food but it did take some time (and sometimes it is still a mess).
