Baby Names

Do you think these names sound similar?

I'm just thinking about names if our next baby is a boy.   My DS is named Nicholas and we call him Nicholas (although when he's older he may want to be called Nick, that's his choice).

I was thinking of the name Dominic (or Dominick- I'm pretty flexible on spelling).  But do you think the "nic" sounds in both names make the names sound too similar?

I'm bored at work, so I'm letting my mind wander into the world of baby names.

So lay it on me.  All opinions are welcome.  Thanks!

Re: Do you think these names sound similar?

  • Dominic is one of my favorite names, but I would never pair it with Nicholas. Too similar.

  • I love Dominic, and I love the nickname Dom. We'd put it on our list, but it doesn't work with our last name.
  • I actually think Dominic and Nicholas would make a very nice sibling pair. They have the "nic" in common, as well as being of similar style and length . . . and I don't really think they're too similar. If they both started or ended with the same sounds or letters, it would be a problem, but they don't.
  • Too similar. Sorry.
  • I don't think it's a bad pairing, but what if Dominic wanted to go by Nick as well? For that reason I think I would consider other names. However, if you cannot find any other names you love, then go for it.
  • I think as full names they are fine since the "nic" sound is in different parts of the names.  I do think if you called you DS Nick that would be to similar.  But, if your one son has a name that will be shortened then I would guess your other son's name would be shortened at some point and Nick and Dom sounds fine together.

that's what I was thinking. What if when Dominic was older, he wanted to be Nic/Nick and it fit him. That would be awkward.

That is a very good point, I did not think about that!  But, I would assume that if his brother's name was Nick it would never cross little Dominic's mind to go by Nick as well.  But your first LO's name does limit his choice in nick names.

But if he has a brother named Nicholas/Nick how likely is that he's going to say, "I want to be Nick, too!" I think that's pretty unlikely. That's like my sister and I both deciding we would like to be called, "Anna," since it's in both of our names. We wouldn't, because it wouldn't make sense.

Absolutely true, but you never know. Her Dominic could become Nic or Dom and her Nicholas could become Nic or Cole. Who's to say what they will choose. Although if you guide each of them to separate nicknames, they are most likely to choose them.. but seeing that you're not a fan of nicknames, who knows.

  • Thanks for the input!  I appreciate it.  :)

  • I think they sound fine together.
  • They are way too similar.

Dominic(k) and Nick? That just seems odd to me. I know you don't call him Nick right now, but it is still weird to me that one full name ends the way the other full name begins.

ETA: I love Nicholas, by the way! If it wasn't my brother's name, it would have been on our list.

  • I do not think they are too  similiar, as far as nicknames, I think people think to much about them they happen naturally, I think its more likely you'll end up with Nick and Dom

  • I think they do sound too similar. Consider if you are calling your children together you will likely yell "Dom and Nick come here" which sounds like you are only calling Dominic. Both are nice names but together I could see some confusion.

  • There's definitely overlap, but it's not as bad as Jonathan and Nathan... kids of my sister's best friend. Oye.
