I know these quesitons can get old, but I need some advice. DS currently gets 4, 5 oz bottles at daycare (he's there about 10 hours), nurses well just before bed and once or twice overnight, and hardly wants to nurse in the morning. He has 2 solid meals - breakfast and dinner -- each consisting of 2 or 3 tablespoons of rice cereal and probably about 2 oz of purees. He's not putting on the 1 lb per month that the pedi said is normal, but she also said his food intake sounds fine and she's not really concerned. However, I would like him to put on more weight.
His daycare provider just said he's finishing the bottles and seems like he might want more. So, would you start sending 4, 6 oz bottles? Or would you add a 3rd meal (maybe a 2 oz jar of purees)? Would you do both? If his appetite is increasing, I want to encourage it so that he puts on more weight (and his pedi said milk will help him put on more weight than solids at this point). But I also think it's probably not typical for his milk intake to increase at this age. Thoughts?
Re: Need lots of advice about number of meals & bottles
My DS is about the same age as yours, and is doing 4 6-8oz bottles a day and 3 solid meals a day. Breakfast is 4oz of fruit/rice, lunch is a 4oz jar of veggies, and dinner is a stage 3 meal with meat/veggies. He's also a big boy-he was 20lbs and 29in long at his 6 month appointment, and I'm sure he's grown a few inches/gained a few pounds since then.
If he's on the smaller side and needs to gain weight, I'd do more formula and see how that goes, then add a 3rd meal as necessary.
Maybe try doing both - for example you could send two 5 oz bottles and two 6 oz bottles so he is getting a little more milk and add in the third meal.
DS gets three meals a day and also drinks 4 6 oz bottles (sometimes he also has 4 oz bottle thrown in there if he seems extra hungry) so I don't think it would be "too" much (I should say my DS is a very big boy though). Milk should be their main source of nutrients for the first year anyways so if it seems like he may be hungrier there is no harm in increasing his milk intake.
Hope that helps a little.
My LO nurses well in the morning. The she eats 3 of 4 five oz bottles and about a 1/4 cup of cereal with 1 oz of fruit and 1 oz of yogurt and for lunch she has rice or another whole grain and 3 oz of other foods. Usually 2 oz of veggies and 1 frozen cube of chopped chicken. Then she gets another serving of solids for dinner nurses again well at night before bed.
She's gaining about 1 lb a month now maybe just slightly less.
