Parenting after a Loss

Is this a "bad idea" re: belly sleeping & rolling?

Okay some background:  DD has been still sleeping in her swaddle. We've tried numerous times to let her out of it (one arm at a time, etc) because she has been breaking out of it for awhile now. However, even with her sleep issues she seems to sleep even worse when she is unswaddled it seems.  However, she does sleep a little bit better on her belly when she naps. We chose to put her belly awhile ago for naps to keep her off of her flat spot on her head.

So last night DD learned to roll over back to belly! Woo hoo! She did it a total of five times in two hours before she went to bed AND when I got up at 11:30 last night to feed her, she had both arms out of her swaddle (we'd started with one arm out), she had rolled over on her tummy, and that was even with a sleep positioner!! She is one strong girl!

So what do you think?  Do you think it would be a "bad idea" to just go ahead and start her off on her belly at night? That way we would have eliminated the issue of her being swaddled (still!!!) and I wouldn't have to worry about her rolling onto her belly at night now in it since she can now do that.  And if she's strong enough to flip herself onto her tummy anyway then she should be okay right? After all she does nap like this too....

What do you think? Anyonen else do this if they are just going to end up on their tummies anyway?

  • As soon as our LO started flipping to his belly, we stopped using any kind of swaddle and really had no say anymore regarding putting him on his back.  He'd flip onto his belly right away.  The doc also said once they can get themselves on their belly, don't worry about flipping them back over.  I'd still probably put her on her back, but just let her stay how she wants.  I think his sleep got better, but he still doesn't STTN....hopefully it works out better for you!

  • Noah never slept on his back. My mom said that when we were young, we always went on our stomachs. So I just did that without a second thought. Our ped said that she'd like to see him on his back, I called her a few days later, it was impossible. He hated being like that. So she said it was silly to stress him out. To this day he's still a belly sleeper! I have heard that once they flip you shouldn't swaddle them. good luck! Pretty soon, she'll be darting up the stairs.....rolling over is the start to everything! ;]

  • When LO started flipping himself onto his tummy (2 months, he was ahead on that one), we gave up on the back thing.  We'd put him on his back, and 3 minutes later, he's be on his tummy.

I did get an Angelcare monitor when he started to sleep on his tummy; the thought of SIDS scared me way too much (still does).

  • DD hated sleeping on her back.  I finally started putting her on her stomach at like 2 1/2 months.  She had pretty good head control by then so I knew she'd be ok turning her head.  And ever since laying her on her stomach she started sleeping 100% better.  The pedi didn't really approve, but I went with my gut.  She absolutely hated being swaddled so that wasn't an option.  And at the last appt with the pedi she said if she was rolling to her stomach, assuming I laid her on her back to go to bed, not to worry about flipping her back.

I say go with what you LO wants to go with and if she's comfortable on her tummy let her stay that way.  :)  Both DH and I are belly sleepers so it looks like DD is too.
