I would laugh my effen azz off at DH if he dared say this to me. You're this child's mother. You have just as much say in it as he does.
To say you are okay with leaving the decision up to him is one thing, but for him to tell you that you have NO say in a parental decision is asinine.
Mr Techie made his argument for having it done and I agreed with him. Like many women, not having that particular appendage had me feeling at a disadvantage in regards to making a true decision.
I've read a lot about it and I can see why you might chose not to have it done. Though the whole appearance thing is a stupid argument in my opinion- I'm not sure how many vaginas you ladies have seen but most of them don't look the same. It's no different with boys.
We're team Green, but if we have a boy we will not circumcise.
What influenced our decision:
1. None of the arguments TO circumcise were convincing enough to us. All of the arguments medically seemed marginal.
2. There seemed to be just as many potential side effects from circumcising as there were from not circumcising...and all of the potential side effects in either case seemed to occur very rarely.
3. We didn't feel comfortable doing something that, in our mind, would be done for cosmetic reasons.
4. DH is not circumcised, and he never felt ridiculed and is glad to be intact (he said, "if someone was looking at my penis closely enough to notice that I was not circumcised, and then made fun of it...I'd ask them why they were looking."
We're Team Green and have already decided that if LO is a boy, he will not be cir'd. Two main reasons: DH is not and there are no religious considerations for us. IMHO, the argument for doing it because it's too much work to keep it clean is not at all compelling and I see it as a sort of genital mutilation. No offense to those who choose to do it - we just view it differently.
If we have a boy (we're team green), we will not be doing the circumcision. I deferred to DH on this one (he's got the relevant parts, so he gets final say on this I think).
Ironically, DH is scheduled for his own circumcision about a month before my due date, due to issues with phimosis (the foreskin does not retract). He still figures it is better to not automatically circ our hypothetical son, because the chances that he would have the same problem are low, and I guess we both feel it is better not to go chopping anything off unless it is necessary to. Also, it is different to decide you need a circumcision as an adult vs. having it decided for you as an infant. At least, that's how we feel about it - YMMV.
I don't think it is particularly awful to do infant circumcision on males (I'm certainly not going to call it genital mutilation), and I can see the argument about doing it at a time when the kid won't remember, but I guess it's a thing you can't undo, so given the lack of evidence of a health benefit, I feel more comfortable erring on the side of not doing it.
I said probably circumcision when this was asked before, but then I talked to DH and he said no circumcision. I always had full intention of doing whatever DH suggested on this one, so if we have a boy (we're team green), we will not circumcise.
Oh, and DH is circumcised and still feels this way.
