Trouble TTC

Acupuncture

I talked to my RE about acupuncture.  He thought it would be a good idea.  Problem is he couldn't recommend anyone.

Who here does acupuncture?  How did you chose who to go to?  Does your insurance cover any of it?  Any tips for me?

TIA!

Re: Acupuncture

  • Beth I have been looking into acupuncture also.  I called my insurance and they do not cover it.

I posted on the local Boston board and got one response (as of  yesterday,I have not looked today) and the acupuncturist was in Nedham, which is a little far away for me.  (I live in Bristol County)  So far I have just been googling and looking at websites.  I may start making some phone calls on Friday so I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you.  I will let you know if I find out anything too.  I live in Bristol County as well and I work in Rhode Island so I would like something close by.

  • Hi Beth!  DH and I did acu for our 2nd IVF and I really believe that it was a big help towards our success.

DH and I both started going once a week aboout 2 months before my ER.  It helped him quit smoking, and his sperm was MUCH better for our 2nd IVF.  It's hard to say if that's because he quit smoking, or because of the acu.  Maybe both.

I went on my way to the ER and right before and after ET.  I continued to go once a week until I was almost out of 1st tri.  They can also give someo great tips about diet changes, etc.

The really important thing is to see someone who specializes in IF.  Good luck!!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Congratulations to my girl AmberZ! So happy for you!
  • Sounds like this might be wrong location for you, but I go to someone in downtown Boston who is amazing, I cannot recommend her highly enough. She specializes in ivf patients. PM me if you want her contact info.

Whatever you decide, good luck with the acu, I am a hugh fan, it's really helped me, esp during my ivf cycle.

  • My clinic has discussion boards.  On that board, I found that a lot of ladies use the same acupuncturist.  If, in the future, I decide to do acupuncture for fertility purposes, I will probably go to her.  However, I have gotten acupuncture through my chiropractor for back problems.  So, I have considered asking her if she was trained in acupuncture for fertility, too.  I know she treats various other diseases with acupuncture.

  • I just goolged 'acupuncture' in my area. Like PP said, just make sure they specialize in IF. I found a wonderful acupuncturist and did about 15 sessions. I had to stop though because my insurance doesn't cover it and it got to be too expensive. I'd highly recommend it!

  • I was going for a while, but it got too expensive.  My insurance offered a 20% discount (BCBSMA) so it was $56/session.  I was seeing someone in Westborough.  I know someone on my local raves about someone in I think Needham-ish?  I liked how it helped me with medication s/e and relaxed me in general, but I can't say it helped with anything fertility-related.

  • Definetly make sure you find someone who specializes in IF, you could call other RE offices in your area to see if they have any recommendations.  I know my RE has a list that's in the IVF packet but my friend who sees another RE down the street didn't have any recommendations.  Acupuncture is spendy if it's not covered by insurance. My insurance will only cover it if I go to an MD who is also and acupuncturists but I refuse to do that. MD's are only reqired 300 hours to be licensed and Acupuncturists have to have over 3,000 hours (or something crazy different like that).  I spend $65 a session but that includes herbal consultation as well.  You won't see a change with just one session, it something you have to do consistently but I've seen a lot of changes the last few months with me. I've cut out dairy per her recommendation as well and that's has helped even more.  Good luck. I love acupuncture.

  • I started acupuncture last month.  One of the guys I work with is married and he and his wife went to the same RE as me, they did injections, IUI's, and finally gave up.  She did acunpuncture for three months, completely changed her diet and got pregnant, she had her baby last month.  She kept urging me to do it and I finally just decided what the hell, I'd try it out.

My insurance doesn't cover anything Infertility related, so I don't rock the boat with this since they cover all my u/s at my RE's office.  My insurance will cover it for other things as long as it is an MD.  She charged $90 for my first consultation and $65 thereafter.  I go roughly once a week, it's also covered on my FSA so I've been using the surplus of money I have on there this year.

If nothing else, it has given me time to reflect and relax, which I don't normally get a chance to do.
