colby - what style is this??

I've noticed that naming style is a hot topic on this board so my question is, what style does Colby fall into?? The other boy names I've come up with to go with his name sound alright as a sibling name, but I really love classic girl names, like Vivienne. So my style varies I guess. Just don't want people saying "your sib names don't mesh"

Re: colby - what style is this??

  • Colby reminds me of an 80's possibly early 90's name mainly because being born in the early 80's I went to school with several. I don't think it is a horrible name but it's not also one that I love and would use. I don't think your sibling names have to really match and Colby and Vivienne would be fine. It's when people use a name like Cash/Axel/Diesel  and then something like WIlliam or Sarah.

  • Colby College- Colby Callet ( singer)  But it reminds me of Coby Beef.

Its cute, not sure how it would translate to adulthood

  • I don't really know what style that would fall into...I'm only an expert on classic names  ;)  lol but I don't really know..I wouldn't say it's trendy, because I don't hear it very often.

  • I think Colby falls into the modern trend of using a surname as a first name, but I agree it doesn't make any huge statement that would clash with a classic name.

  • 1. Colby Sawyer College in NH

    2. Cheese

Actually, I would say this is reality TV show inspired, so an English surname turned trendy name. Then the singer, Colbie Caillat, has started this trend for girls. I hope it doesn't stick.

I think it could work for a few different naming styles. It's not a modern invented name, so that definitely opens up the possibility for other styles...surnames, classic. I would think outmoded classic would be the only one that people would raise an eyebrow at. You know, Colby matched with Augustus or something like that. I think you could just come up with a name you love, because people generally stay within their naming style without thinking about it.

  • "Surname as first name" is the style.

Also, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in real life saying "your children's names don't match." That's just something people stress out about on these boards.

  • I know your son is already named Colby, but the first thing I think of is cheese. (I love cheese though) I think others have it with 'trendy' or 'surnames as FN'.

I think Vivienne would be fine with Colby.  I would avoid Brianne or anything that could be nn'd Bri. :)

  • Waoh, people. Colby is the name of her little boy. She's looking for a style to match with her son's name.

OP - I think you're free to use whatever style you want. I think maybe Colby falls somewhere in the middle of styles. It's kind of 80s and it isn't overly formal or traditional. So maybe go with non-traditional unusual names that are obviously real and not made-up names. Names like Colby and Brenna, Colby and Eric, etc.

  • I agree with the "surname as a first name" thing. I would never expect a brother of a Vivienne to be Colby.
