Introducing a Pacifier?

At what age, if at all, did you decide to give little one a pacifier.  I don't mind letting little one comfort nurse occasionally, but it would definitely make life a little easier if I could get away with giving her a pacifier once in a while.  I'm just a little afraid to give her one, because I don't want to cause any nipple confusion.  Thanks!

  • Our girl got a pacifier in the hospital and we haven't had any problems.  She only get it now at bedtime though, and sometimes when we are out.

  • We started on day one!  But we were very careful about it's use.

Drew had a HUGE need to suck and would basically have been on the breast all day the first few weeks.  I couldn't handle that (emotionally or physically) at first.  We used the paci to soothe him and help him sleep.

If he was hungry, he would spit it out immediately and continue fussing.  If he just wanted to suck, he'd take the paci fine.

  • i would do so sooner rather than later.  I waited until 4 weeks and after taking additional time to try out different types of pacis, my son was no longer interested.  I regret it after meeting so many moms who also breast feed and introduced pacis in the first 2 weeks without a problem.  My LO doesn't STTN because he still doesn't know how to self soothe...

  • Nipple confusion from a paci is VERY rare. It more usually happens from a bottle nipple. Go ahead and use one if you need to, there is no reason not to.
