The meaning of a name

Do you take in account the meaning of the name when you are choosing baby names?  I LOVE the name Molly and I think that is the name we will go with if this little nugget is a girl but it means Bitter.  Not that it has ever really mattered to me but I just don't want to stick my baby with a name with a negative meaning.  Just your thoughts.  Thanks!

Re: The meaning of a name

  • Nope.  I never gave the meaning of my boys' names any thought!

I think the only time people ask what a name means is when it's a name from another country and they ask if it means something in that language.

  • I give it some thought, but I pay a lot more attention to the impression I get from a name based on people I know. Like I've never known a Jacob who wasn't a brat. And I've never known a Kelsey who wasn't homely. That has a bigger effect on me than what the name means.

  • Molly is a form of Mary and its meaning is more complicated than that - it's not JUST bitter, but can also mean...

  • Eh, I allow it to sway me when its a hard choice and that is simply because I love the meaning of my name. I agree with the pp that said nobody really knows what each other's name means, but the nameholder does and the namegiver....

I was really liking Calvin, until I found the meaning to be bald.. def a no go.

Nope, I don't even know what DS#1's name means. No idea. I never even look at the meaning of names when considering them.
  • I do love it if my daughter's name has a lovely meaning. My daughter's means Grace (as in the Grace of God) and I love it. My mom's name means Lame - her name is Claudia, which is one reason why I really am not fond of using it as a middle name somewhere.

  • I look at the meaning of names.  I sisn't like the meaning of DD's name but it would have nerver stopped us from using it.  I love Molly too. Great name.

  • Thank you poster with the links!  That was very informative!
  • I think a name's connotation is every bit as important. Molly is derived from Mary, which means bitter, but most people who name their child Mary aren't thinking of bitterness, they are thinking of the Virgin Mary.

And I know I've said this before, but there are names with cool meanings I still wouldn't give my kid. For instance, Adolf means "wolf."  However cool Wolf is for a meaning, the connotations of Adolf are INCREDIBLY uncool.

  • After reading the Name Nerds article, and doing a lot of serious thinking, I've decided I care more about the overall etymology of a name, which does include meaning, but I'm focused more on the the history, country/countries of origin and evolution, as well as notable namesakes. I think the meaning is interesting to know, but doesn't affect my opinion of it.

  • I did take it into account, because I always thought that the meaning of my name "fit" me and I wanted a name that might "fit" my DD as well.

Her name means "cheerful" - perfect Wink

Name popularity was the #1 rule on my list of 3.  That would make or break a name.  Once it got past that, if it had a great meaning, as well, it was on my list.

  • Yes, the meaning is very important to me.

  • I used to love the name Deidre but I think it has a similar meaning and shied away from it for that reason.

For my boys I do consider the meaning, but it isn't the deciding factor.  One son's name translates as "Divine Gift"  and the other translates as "Free or From France" not as special and a little ironic considering I spend over $2k OOP to conceive him.

  • If I was on the fence about a name I would probably let the meaning sway me one way or another.

For example I think the name Maya is pretty but then I came across Amaya which means night rain. For some reason I thought that meaning was really cool and now I like Amaya so much more.
