Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO start sitting still-ish for books?

My LO will only sit for maybe one or two pages, max, and then pushes the book away.  I mean super-simple board books, so there aren't many words on the pages.  I love books and he has an entire bookshelf stuffed full, so I can't wait until he's ready to snuggle in and read with me.  When did your LO start sitting still, or at least sitting for half a book?

  • Probably around 6-8 months? He's always just really liked books though.

  • I wish I would have kept better track of these things. But I'd say pretty early. My DD LOVES reading books. (we read the same one every night at bedtime) and at 15 times a day she brings me a book and sits on my lap to read it. She is ver patient.
  • Still waiting! :o/ She's been doing it at daycare starting shortly after her birthday, but I think it's the peer pressure thing because they can somehow get all the kids sitting down in a row for storytime. At home, forget it! But then again she doesn't sit still for anything, she's just a "busy" kid.

  • Probably around 15 months.  Now she absolutely loves books and will glady sit for me.  Even when she didn't sit still I still tried to read them to her.
  • I'd say about 12 months. Now she sits even longer during storytime.  Of course only on the books she loves. We have a few books that's don't seem to really interest her but I keep pushing 'em hoping she'll lean towards a new favorite book.  She loves being read the same books over and over.
  • Since...birth?

Seriously, DS has always loved books.

  • Alex was only 14-15m and he LOVES books now. Will is very sporadic; every few days he might sit through a whole book but not usually, and he's been like that for months.

  • DD has always loved books. She brings them to me, turns around, sits down in my lap and lets me read usually 3 books at a time.

  • It was around 13-14 months.  DS loved to hear stories before than, but was always busy doing somethine else while listening instead of sitting for a book. Now? He brings books to us and climbs up in our laps. I love it, except some of the books are getting really redundant....

  • We have been reading books to LO since he was tiny, maybe 2 months. He has been able to sit through 8-10 books at a time for a long time. He wants you to read book after book to him, he loves books! He has about 60 books because friends and family know how much he likes them and get him books all the time.

  • Soon after his first birthday.  Now after bath he will go straight to his bookshelf, grab a book, and follow me into the living room so I will read it to him.  After I read one, he will get up, go into his room, grab another one and bring it back.  Sooo cute!!

It helps for me to point out animals/shapes on each page after I read it.  Like, "see the pretty blue bird?" and he'll point to the bird on the page.

  • J would prefer to read his books on his own.  He's much more likely to sit still and go through a stack of board books turning the pages and muttering to himself (I can only imagine he thinks he's reading) than he will for us reading to him.  If he's really tired, he'll let us read - he's been doing that since about 8 months.
  • She kind of always did? I don't know if this is freakish, but she never really squirmed to get away when we were reading. I mean when she was way younger she wasn't really engaged in them, but when she started really understanding the process she just sat there. She does get antsy for super long ones, like Dr. Seuss. So we stick to board books. I think the longest book she sits through is The Grouchy Ladybug.

  • Our DD has always loved books.  Your child might not be interested yet and that is completely okay-- there are lots of other things to discover & learn in real life!  I think the important thing is exposing children to language.  You can read books out loud while your child plays, play books on tape/CD, and tell your child stories.  Try reading a book with your child facing YOU so that they are drawn into your facial expressions and have more to look at than 'just a page in a book'.  Touch & Feel and pop-up books are great.  Also, let your child play with magazines, newspapers, etc.  There is no need for a child to be interested in reading yet, if they are fantastic and if not that is great too. Hopefully your LO will want to snuggle up and read before you know it.  GL!

This. DS only wanted to read to himself for the longest time. So I let him look at books and read aloud to him. I still read whatever book I'm personally reading out loud at different parts of the day. Around his 1st birthday was when he really became interested with us reading though DC said he was the best kid during circle time since 10 months. Now he can sit through 5-10 books at a time and still be very engaged.

  • When he was really little (i.e. before he could crawl/walk away) he would, but he really just started to LOVE books around 17 months.  He brings them to us to read to him and really likes certain ones.  He likes us to read some over and over again.  I'
  • DS was really good about sitting for books until he could walk (just after a year). THen he would wiggle away pretty quickly. I've noticed though that he still wants to listen to the story if he can stand next to me and look at the book so I don't force him to sit if he doesn't want to

  • DD started really getting into books around 16 months but before that she was not interested.
