    when they show up in your news feed, if you hover to the far right, it will say, "Hide Person," or you can "hide application" if you get a bunch of Farmville crap or other applications.

    OK, I was wrong. Actually, click on the X and then it will say "Hide SoandSo" or Cancel or another option.
