I am using the answer brand opk and this is the first month that I've used them (I tried charting my temperature but I just have to erratic a morning to do that at the same time, and to not to anything beforehand means that while I'm doing that my dogs lose their minds) anyway...so I've been using my FMU on the OPK's but I remember seeing somewhere that you're not supposed to .
Now I can't find the post that said not to & why - and I can't find anything conclusive on-line through google which says yes or no.
Re: Are you supposed to use FMU on OPKs?
You're not supposed to because most surges are in the afternoon. But I know a lot of ladies who do use them as FMU and it's fine.
If the line is getting darker you might want to use FMU and then again in the afternoon just to be safe.

The LH surges between something like 11a-6p, so you're suppossed to test during that time.
Up until this month, I've never had an issue with using FMIU...it was enough to catch the surge. However, I had a + yesterday around 4p, and a "-" this morning. I didn't test yesterday morning though.

My RE insists that I do them with FMU b/c I have to call before 7 AM whe I have a surge. That being said, I usually get my first + later in the day, but it is still + the next AM with FMU. Once you start to surge it will be + no matter what time of day you test until it starts to lower in your system. Personally, I prefer to test more than once a day just to be sure I catch the start of my surge.

Like PPs said, anytime between roughly 10/11 and late afternoon is (supposedly) ideal for OPK testing--based on the hormone surge time. I usually test right after lunch (when I have to pee anyway); that way I have a fixed way to remember.
I must admit I've also tested twice a day in the past, though, so as not to miss the surge. I buy $ tree tests, so they're cheap. I usually have 2 days in a row of OPK +s.
