Pregnant after IF

Twins and video monitors

I'm undecided about if I want or need a video monitor.  Our house is small and the babies will be sleeping in the nursery from the start.  The nursery is only steps away from my bedroom, the kitchen and the living room.  The video monitor seems like a 'nice to have' but not an essential.  And with twins I guess I need two cameras?

Any thoughts?  TIA

Re: Twins and video monitors

  • ugh! I've been wondering the same thing. DH wants one just in case one of the babies gets stuck or flips funny or something. But I told him that I would probably watch the damn monitor like a junkie and it would be bad for my mental health. I feel like I need to put them in there and just listen for them with the audio monitor, KWIM?

IDK, it's tempting especially since you can connect the video monitor to a signal on your TV and/or your laptop with some brands and watch them like 24/7 LOL. That's all I need to do is play into my compulsiveness.

  • Our girls' nursery is right next to our bedroom.  I can hear every peep even without a monitor.  We have a sound monitor only, but we don't even use it at night.  We only use it if we're sitting in the backyard or something while they are sleeping.  I didn't want to deal with 2 cameras and how that would look mounted, etc.  We do just fine without one!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Thanks Niki and Kim.  I'm afraid of being sucked into the baby gear machine and wanting everything.... so it's nice to get confirmation that some things just aren't necessary.
  • Oh AND I would totally obsess over it too
  • I am sure they are not necessary but we are getting one. Not sure how it works yet seeing as how we would need 2 screens somehow? My apt is big and it would put my mind at ease to have one.

I was at my BFFs house the other day and I stared at her 3 year old on the monitor until he sung himself to sleep.

    too freaking cute!

  • Wondering this too.  I loved the peace of mind the angel care monitor gave us last time, so I'm tempted to get a second of those...but a video would have come in handy a LOT as he got older and was having sleep issues.
  • We had a Mobicam with DS and loved it.  I was under the assumption that it was a luxury item as well but someone gave it to us as a shower gift and we coudn't return it.  It ended up being one of our most-valuable baby items we received!

I was for sure getting a video monitor this time around but needed one with multiple cameras.  This one in Baby Bargains got the best reviews for the best price.  We just ordered it the other day.   https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Multiview-Handheld-Monitor/dp/B000XSCCUU/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1282489077&sr=8-15

so where are you placing the cameras? Our cribs are going to be side by side on a long wall which is flanked by a window and another wall.

this is the only way we'd be able to fit a dresser and a glider in their room. So unless I attached the camera to their crib or the wall I'd have no where to put it!

H wall-mounted ours last time and I assumed we would be doing the same thing this time as well (I believe most video monitors come with wall-mount hardware...not positive on that though).  It worked out great and we had a perfect view of DS all the time.  We have the same space issue as well, with the two cribs, and this was the only way we would be able to use the monitors.

  • Summer Infant? Best View Handheld Color Video Monitor

DH picked this one, though I stupidly didn't think about the second camera AND I agree I would totally stare at the thing all night long.

  • We are getting a video monitor. Our nursery is on a separate floor and I like the idea of being able to see if they are just fussing in their sleep or if  they're stuck, lost a paci, etc. My mom already said she would buy it for us. We are looking at the different summer infant ones.

  • Do you think you could mount it so that you had just one camera with a view of both cribs?  I'm trying to figure out if I could just do this with a webcam or something.
  • We are going to start off with the basic sound only monitor.  If I feel like we need a video monitor, we'll look into them at that time.  The nursery is right across the hall from our bedroom, so I think the video monitor might be too much for us.

I am sure that you could.  Although with the Mobicam that we had for DS, the quality wasn't good enough that you could put it far enough away from babies to get two cribs in the picture AND still see any kind of decent detail.  I haven't used the new one yet but I am sure they have improved them and you could probably get away with just one.

Our friends have twins and have two cameras for home because the cribs are on separate walls. When they travel and put the pnp next to each other they only use one camera. The camera has really good range.

Niki- with your set up you could probably do one camera in the middle and see both babies.

  • We tried a video monitor with our twins.  Honestly, it didn't work the way we expected and we returned the unit.  We have an audio monitor that works just fine.  We had 2 cameras but the video monitor switched too slowly between them.  It also wouldn't switch between cameras if it was focused on one baby and the other started to cry.
