My son just turned 7 mos. old today.
He is a wild monkey man in his crib--sticking arms and legs through the bars, spinning and turning and pushing his head against the sides.
We're thinking of buying new crib bedding and it of course comes with the bumper.
Are bumpers safe or safer once a child can roll over and move? I've read a lot of conflicting answers--some still say no for SIDS but some say if they can move they'll move their faces....but don't know what to believe.
I know there will be some hardcore folks out there who say no--nothing in the crib ever but he has crib toys and he escapes his swaddling blanket all the time and chews on it.
A couple of times he's rolled over and conked his head on the crib bars and started crying...the boy can do some crazy, Blue Angels style rolls! LOL
I know they do pose a SIDS risk for a time--so why are they included in every set?
The sad thing is this baby no. 2 (so I should know) but with my daughter we couldn't afford a full-on decorative crib set and just had a sheet in there with a blanket for swaddling. She was mobile but never seemed to get herself in the craziness my son does...
Re: Maybe dumb questions about crib bumpers...
Elizabeth 5yrs old Jane 3yrs old
I have bumpers in my daughters crib the kind that also came with the bedding. Shes been in a crib since she was 5 months old and havent had a problem with them yet. She doesnt roll when shes in the crib but she does spin around and I didnt want her legs to get stuck in the slots.
Im not worried about the bumpers maybe because shes still in my bedroom with me and I can see her. Im not sure if I would want her to have the bumpers in her crib if she had her own room.
I made it past my goal I nursed for 1 year and 6 weeks! Im so proud of myself!
It's all up to you!
We have the bumpers in, always have. They work for us.

Thanks everyone--
I am probably over thinking this whole thing--it's silly really. My husband is super glad he has a boy--his big dream is for a little rockstar guy--a kid that loves good music (DH plays guitar, etc.)
So DH found the set online and emailed it to me---it's a rockstar theme with guitar mobile. Super cute.
But it is expensive and it seems a waste to already to not use the fancy embroidered quilt-or maybe use it as a play mat/blanket or hang it up on the wall....and then to not use the bumper leaves you with a sheet and bed skirt.
This set also comes with 3 bumpers so you have your choice depending on your crib size--that seems a bit excessive too.
We definitely aren't the "splurgy" type, we love a good deal--my DH was just so tickled and excited, started talking about hanging guitars on the walls...framing his vinyl records...
He usually lets me drive the purchase/design decisions for decor but has his heart set on this rock star theme.
So thank you for the advice it will help with our decision!
We don't use a bumper. I didn't see the point of spending the $ on something I'd only use for a few months. DS is fine.
Remember that you are supposed to take them out once LO starts to pull up, so they can't stand on them to try to climb out. At this point I think it's a waste of $.
Can you get just the quilt to hang on the wall and forgo the rest of the set?
This. DS likes to turn until he's laying across the crib, and then he pushes his legs on the crib, which pushes his head onto the other side. It's not just in his crib, he'll do it in his pack and play, he just likes it. We're all for bumpers!
With my oldest, we used the quilt that came with the bedding set as an actual quilt when he moved to a toddler bed. (And today it's on the living room floor as a play mat for LO.) I'd say we definitely got our money's worth even though we didn't use the quilt until he was 2.
As for the bumpers, they should be taken out once LO starts standing so that he doesn't use them to step on and climb out of the crib. You probably wouldn't have much time with the bumpers. But if you're crafty, you could always modify the bumpers into a window valance when you're done with them.
