Low milk supply - any success stories?

DD is two weeks old and my milk supply is really low. I pump at least every 2 hrs and am still getting only 1 oz at best. I'm eating oatmeal and drinking a lactation support tea and still no increase.

I am working with a lactation consultant who said at this point she wants me to consider testing and medication.

Anyone have low supply that increased eventually? I'm so frustrated.

Re: Low milk supply - any success stories?

  • I had a low supply at first, so I kept BF and BF, and eventually my supply increased. I do suppliment with Formula to give nips a rest when out in public, but as long as LO is gaining, she is getting enough. In the first week I was stoked if I got 1 oz....remember they dont need a lot at first, and what you pump is not a true indication of supply, babies are more effecient suckers than pumps. The toughest part is getting over the pain from feeding as your nips get used to it. It is frustrating but it gets better! :)

  • I had a very low supply when Bfing my son. I was told to try taking Fenugreek vitamins. I bought them at GNC. I was also told to get as much sleep as possible (Haha, and how was I supposed to do that with a NB right? :) and drink lots of water and milk. And eat oatmeal. (So, good that you are already doing that) HTH!
  • I don't have any advice...just wanted you to know you aren't alone.

I also pump about 1/2 an ounce every 3 hours...sometimes less.  I'm doing the oatmeal, the tea, the fenugreek, one beer a day...you name it, I've tried it.  The LC I've been working with thinks I may just be one of the few whose milk supply never comes in.  Lucky me.  Unfortunately DS also won't nurse so I can only pump.  If your LO will BF I would recommend trying that as much as you can because it's much more efficient than pumping.  Good luck!

  • You are not alone! I am in the same boat. I was taking 15 fenugreek tabs a day, mothers milk tea, water, oatmeal, etc...and it worked just okay, but I started taking domperidone and started pumping with a hospital grade pump and now sometimes I can get 2oz in a pumping session (every 2 hours!). We are still supplementing with formula 50% of the time, but that is way less than we were.  On Thursdays on the Breastfeeding board is a Low Supply Check-In that is wonderful for info and support, and check out the website www.mobimotherhood.com (or org, can't remember). You can buy domperidone at www.inhousepharmacy.com, and buy enough for 90mgs/day for 6 weeks. Remember that ANY breastmilk you can give your baby is better than none. Good luck!

This is me exactly. DD won't nurse either. She tore apart my nipples in the hospital and two LCs told me to use a nipple shield. I do that now, but I don't think she gets anything when she sucks. Plus she'll only suck for a minute or two at a time. It's so frustrating!!

  • I had the same story as you and did the same thing. About the end of the third week I had a sudden increase and started pumping 4oz! I was thrilled!

Then I went to the beach (a middle-of-nowhere kind) and forgot a piece of my pump so I couldn't pump for 24 hours and I only got DS to nurse once. (He ate formula the rest of the time) My production took a huge hit and now I'm back to square one.

The lesson here? Keep doing what you're doing and whatever you do, DON'T STOP!

    GL!
