Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Gas (farts)

My DD has been getting terrible bouts of gas and it's not burping. This happens in the early mornings and she just grunts for hours trying to get it all out. It's preventing her from sttn and causing mom to get up at 4:30AM every day because I can't sleep through that. I've tried the little tummy massage and that helps her get some out, but theres usually much more in there.

I've read that it can be the foods I'm eating causing her gas issues but then I read that that's just a myth.

 Any tips from anyone?

Re: Gas (farts)

  • My DD grunted like that for while.  She'll outgrow it.  You can also try bicycle legs to help get the gas out.

Oh and by the way... it's rare for a one month old to STTN.

  • most babies grunt a ton. Its normal. They outgrow it.

btw: dd still doesn't STTN. It takes awhile.

  • This is why I let DS sleep on his tummy once he had good head control just before two months.  He was able to get his toots out much easier in the early morning hours this way.  I bought the Snuza Halo movement monitor for peace of mind while he slept on his tummy.

EDIT: DS does not sleep through the night; he usually wakes up twice to nurse.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll keep trying the tummy rubs and leg bicycling.

I realize that she's young yet, but I keep hearing about all these people who brought their babies home and they sttn right away or within 1 month. I think I just got it in my head that she should be sleeping better but maybe not through the night.

I guess I also think that the gas issue is the problem...not waking to feed 2-3 times during the night. I actually don't mind the feedings. The grunting for an hour or more is what's getting to me.
