Baby name wizard? One of our top names came back with this fact/definition, whether its true or not is not a deal breaker as DH could care less what any name means, but before I go quoting it, I would like to know if its true:
Origin of the name Carissa:
Italian elaboration of Cara (beloved, dear).
My name is Cara so I thought that was interesting, but again, is it true?
Re: How accurate is....
Babynames.com says basically the same thing:

Baby Name Wizard is usually fairly reliable, but in this case, I think they've missed their mark. Carissa, based on the etymology could not be Italian; if it were it would be spelled Carezza or Carisa. It could be Greek. I found two sources that corroborated with me that it was Greek and one that elaborated that it would mean grace.
Behind the Name says that it has English origins, is a variant of Charissa and was derived from the name Charis, first mentioned by poet Edmund Spencer in the Faerie Queen in 1590.
Baby Name Place seems to think it is French and means caress, which is questionable since 'caresse' is caress in French and they're not pronounced closely at all.
But . . . it is without doubt derived from the Latin root, caro, which carries the meaning beloved, or to be loved. Since Cara is a more direct derivative of caro, it's safe to say that yes, Carissa is a variant of Cara and, in German is considered a pet name for girls named Cara, meaning "Little Cara."
I wouldn't quote Baby Name Wizard and tell anyone it's Italian, but by all means, tell them it's a variant of Cara: ) What a cute story to tell your daughter.
I wouldn't be much help on telling you the accuracy of the baby name wizard.. but I did want to say that I think Carissa is a beautiful name and I love how it incorporates your name as well.
We decided on Abby for our daughter (Abigail) because its somewhat of a combination of both of our names while still being somewhat original. My name is Ashley and my husbands name is Bobby. I'm not much for jrs because I think having an original name is important (to us, nothing against those who choose otherwise). Just wanted to commend your option of using Carissa
