Alternate name spellings - WDYT?

Tonight I saw two teenagers who were wearing hand-painted tshirts that said "Gaby and Emaleigh's fun week" or something like that on them.

Emaleigh.  What do you think?  I am not one for alternate spellings of classic names (or any names, actually), so it was definitely nms.  Would you use an alternate spelling for your LO?

Re: Alternate name spellings - WDYT?

  • My name is spelled differently so it doesn't completely bother me.  But, for some reason seeing Emily spelled that way bothers me.

This! My name is spelled differently too and so I like different spellings but that Emaleigh is a little too out there even for me!

  • I like normal spellings of names.  I don't think you should have to say "My name is Emily, spelled e-m-a-l-e-i-g-h" or however else it's spelled.  :)

  • I really don't like them, which is funny because my legal name is spelled somewhat alternatively and I actually like it because I dislike the traditional spelling.

I was talking to the people who are renting our house, and the wife is due any day now.  We were talking about names, and she was telling me how they like "weird" names with crazy spellings.  We both said we liked boy names for girls, and I said I've always loved James for a girl.  She said she loved that but would want to spell it differently so that people would know she was a girl.  She said she'd spell it Jaymz.  NMS.

  • I think there is a difference between "alternative" spellings and "made up" spellings.  Alternative spellings I'm usually ok with.  For example, Kelly, Kelli, Kelley, and Kellie are all ok in my book.  The last 3 are less common spellings, but still a normal spelling of the name.  But, Kellee or Kelee would be made up and and only done to be different, and that annoys me.  In fact, anything people do just to purposely be different usually annoys me.

  • As a teacher, I'm not a fan of different spellings. I see how confusing it is for kids and parents and always having to  correct people who spell it wrong. My friend who is also a teacher and always complained about weird spellings named her daughter Emileigh- go figure.
  • I absolutely HATE it.  Poor kid will spend her entire life spelling her name for everyone and correcting pronounciations at job interviews.

No, thank you.  Think of the kid, please, when you choose a name.

  • I don't mind alternate spellings like the above post with the kelly example, and maybe Emaleigh was to honor grandparents? Like Emma was Dad's grandma and --- Leigh was mom's grandma? I think it's kind of cool looking but I'd never use a spelling that different for the sheer sake that in kindergarten she had to learn to spell that while little Joe next to her got off easy lol

It might be EMMA-LEE rather then Emily.  My niece is Emma Leigh (first name middle name).  It is okay - the alternate spelling.  But I think it will probably give teachers a headache trying to not offend little ones by always misspelling their name.

FWIW - Addy's name has plenty of spellings.  We went with Adelyn because we liked it best overall with her middle and last name.

  • I hate alternate name spellings and to be honest I bet the person with that name hates it too.  Just imagine your whole life everyone spells your name "wrong" and you have to correct them and have them roll their eyes at the stupid way your name is spelled - no thanks!
