Adela?

What do you think of this name for a girl? It's pronounced Ah-day-la.

Re: Adela?

  • I LOVE this name! I was trying to remember the name Adele. Thank you for the reminder. ;) And I LOVE the pronunciation you have for Adela. Perfection.

  • I like it - but are you sure about the pronciation? Where did the DAY part come from (not that it isn't legit - just wondering).

This is what I have on the name:

  • Actually, I did a spanish minor in college and I read this book where a character's name was Adela...and I just loved it. But, looking it up (english) it says it's pronounced a-dell-ah. So, I guess maybe I'd have to spell it differently to get the sound I want....maybe Adala or Adayla....

  • Huh...yeah, it has Spanish listed on there, so yeah maybe another name that has the DAY sound? I can't find anything that isn't made up...I bet strangebird could dig up more....

    oh strangebird!

ETA: For what it's worth, my daughter's name is Emmeline, and while the French pronunciation is Emma - Leen, we use Emma - Line (which is the only way I've heard it spoken). I have the same issue with Dashiell - this is the original spelling and is the one I prefer, but Americans seem to pronounce it like Dash-uhl as opposed to Dash Ee el. I know that pronunciations get treated differently depending on the country their spoken in or get transported to...I think that's how the INE gets treated in names like Katherine, Caroline, and Josephine. Anyway, just thought I'd put that out there in case you love the spelling of Adela.

  • I knew an Adella (pronounced a-DELL-ah), and she went by Della for short. Loved her and love the name. Could also go by Addie. (I'm kinda a fan of nicknames more than the given...)
  • I think both ways of saying it are pretty :)

  • I like the A-dell-ah pronunciation much better than the one with a "day" sound in it. Either way, it's okay, but I prefer the name Adelina (just saw this posted here yesterday, not sure if it was also you?).

  • Wasn't me, but I think Adelina is really cute too!
  • Adela is not my favorite, but I could get behind it for someone else's child.

The reason I think I'm not a fan is it looks a bit incomplete to me. Like you were writing Adelaide and had to go check the pie in the oven.

  • I LOVE this name. :)

  • I would have pronounced it Ah-dell-uh, and that way I love it, it seems very Old South to me. Very sweet.
