Baby Names

What do you think of the name...

I was looking for a long, glamourous, old fashioned, rare, old french name with a historical/literary meaning.  I dont mind if its difficult to pronounce or spell, but prefer it sound pretty in english and in french.

Genevi?ve             We would say it in the french way  (jon-vie-e`ve)- soft J

But in english i think its gorgeous too. :)

  • Beautiful!

Although you would have to correct people forever on pronunciation if you go with the French way.

  • I LOVE IT....as long as no one shortens it to Jenny! Genevieve is my grandmother's name! We are also using a VERY long name for this dd and naming her Evangeline and calling her Evie!

Edit: I don't like your pronunciation. I LOVE Jen-a-vieve though!

  • I don't care for the French pronunciation. It seems too convoluted and pretentious to me.

  • I knew a Genevieve in high school (prounounced the French way).  People learn.

  • I know two people with the name not pronounced the french way.
  • I don't think this one would be too hard for people to learn how to pronounce. It doesn't have that gutteral r or some of the other French sounds that are hard for an English speaker to say. Nice choice.

  • love it and the french pronunciation is so beautiful
  • Beautiful! I have a friend who named her daughter the same, and they NN her Gigi.
  • I have a friend who has the same name and the same pronunciation.  I really like it.

Not everyone has to be streamlined to having the English way.  I say go with what you like and people will follow.

  • That's a family name on my maternal side, but pronounced the English name, and the nickname was Weevie.

  • It's my best friend's name (pronounced the same way) and I like it a lot.  Yeah, she has to repeat her name once or twice when introducing herself, and typically gives another name (like Sarah) when ordering at Starbucks (just not worth the effort of explaining/spelling to them).  She likes it a lot and doesn't mind the slight inconveniences.

  • Im so glad you guys like it!  I do see how it might be a bit annoying to explain, but to me, having something different and unique is more important.  Its SO nice to hear others that have heard it pronounced this way and think people can learn!! :)
  • love it. I had a friend named Genevieve in college. Her Mom was french and pronounced it the french way and it was so beautiful (and way cool!). I have thought about this name if we have a 2nd girl too....my fear is that people (her peers in school, etc) would shorten to Gen/Jen. I actually don't hate the nickname, but I c'mon, I know a million Jennifers that all go by Jen and I'm just over it.
