Trouble TTC

Newbie Intro

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. Oops actually second time poster, I introduced myself on secondary infertility the other day.I thought I'd finally post an intro on this board because it's the one I lurk on the most.

My husband and I have been ttc for about sixteen months now. We started fertility testing about a month and a half ago. So far his SA came back totally fine as did my u/s. The favorable u/s was a bit of a shock because at the age of twelve I was diagnosed with PCOS. My ob/gyn now is pretty sure I was misdiagnosed when I was 12 because not only was my u/s fine but so was my bloodwork, no signs of PCOS whatsoever. So as of right now I've been diagnosed with unexplained annovulation. Which is so frustrating, not knowing what the heck the problem is and why I'm not ovulating like I should be.

I'm sorry this is a bit long, if you don't feel like reading it all I totally understand, but I do have a question and need some advice.

I've read a lot of people on here say that going to an RE is very important and that an OB/GYN just isn't qualified to help with infertility. I totally get that, but going to an RE for us is extremely difficult. We're in a small town in Wyoming and the closest RE for us is almost three hours away in another state. We're totally out of pocket because our insurance covers absolutely no infertility testing or treatments. Honestly we just can't afford to travel that far for doctors appointments on top of paying for treatments and meds, especially if I end up on Clomid and need to be monitered. We also have weather to worry about as it will start snowing here in about a month and a half and many times all the roads out of town will be closed completely.

I guess my question is, what would you all do in that situation? My OB/GYN has done some fertility treatments in the past and definitely insists on monitoring me if I get put onto Clomid. So do you think it's ok to stay with him for as long as we can? If we end up moving on to IUI or IVF we'll just have to suck it up and travel, or else stop treatments and hope for the best.

So sorry this ended up being so long and if you made it to the end you're a trooper. Thank you for reading, it feels good just to get it out you know? And any advice would be appreciated.

  • Welcome! Not being in your situation, I'm not really sure what I'd do about the RE vs OB. Is there anyone else going through/went through IF that you could talk to in your area? Did they drive to the RE or not? While it's great that your OB would monitor you on Clomid, RE's are just so much more versed in finding the root of IF problems (in most cases) that I would be slightly worried about just seeing your OB. Have you had an HSG? That is a must before starting any meds. Maybe you could go for the initial consult with the RE, see what he/she says, and if it really is unexplained IF and they've ruled everything else out, then go back to your OB?

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the reply.  I'm having an hsg on the 25th and if that is all clear then my doc wants to do a Clomid test, which I'm a little confused as to what that is and after that we would move onto trying to concieve with Clomid if both the hsg and clomid test were good.

I really don't have another couple I can talk to. The only other couple being treated for infertility by my doctor are an older couple who actually owned a home in the city closest to us with an RE so she used that house while doing testing and treatment. Unfortunately we don't have that option.

I appreciate the advice though and you're definitely right about an RE being more qualified. I am lucky that my OB is really great. He is totally aware that he isn't an RE and has given me a good recommendation for one. But he has offered to go as far with us as he feels qualified. I think we'll probably just have to stick with his plan for awhile and hope for the best.

  • It sounds like you have put alot of thought into your situation.  Discussed it with your OB.  You know your options and your abilities (financially, travel, time, etc.) so stick with your plan and see where it takes you.  You'll know when it's the right time to move on  Best of luck!!

  • Welcome! I dont have too much advice for you as i am not in your situation but i wanted to wish you good luck. I cant imagine what its like to not have a specialist within a reasonable drive away! I would only see and RE for IF treatments. I know my OB is not qualified lol and i just found out my nurse up and left the state with her hubby on a job opportunity! I really wish you the best and hope you figure everything out. If you are able to be properly monitored i would say stick with the OB for Clomid. I would defintely talk to them about injectibles or IUI's and anthing that would come after Clomid. GL!!
