Trying to Get Pregnant

How hard will it be for me to get pregnant?

Hello,

I am recently married and my hubbie and I are very anxious and excited to get pregnant! We are ok with the idea of conceiving in the next year or so, so I won't be making sure to have sex at all the "right" times; we're going to just let it happen naturally I think for now.

As a woman who has always been on BC, my biggest fear is to not be able to get pregnant. I feel like I have 2 major things against me. 1) I am very petite. Only 100 lbs and 5'3". I've heard that women my size have a hard time getting pregnant. Does anyone have any comments on that? 2) I have never had a single regular period off BC in my life. A couple years ago I tried to go off again for about 9 mos and I had my period heavily every 1-4 wks but spotted almost 50-75% of days besides that. I'm not excited to go off BC for that reason. I heard that a friend of a friend has irregular periods as well and has been trying over 2 years w/ no luck. Anyone out there with a similar problem who hasn't had difficulty conceiving?

Sorry about the long message! I'm trying not to think that it will be difficult but it's hard not to.Thanks!

Jackie

  • I'm not to sure about the size thing... I know ,any women who are about your size and have several children, but I don't know the statistics. I do though understand your concern with coming of bc and never having a regular period. I had one regular period in hs and I was off to the dr to get bc pills bc..."my mom wasn't to have her daughter be a teenage mommy like her"...sooooo may was my first month off and I had all these weird symptoms so ill tell you what I experienced so you know what you might have in store: I was so sure I was pregnant I had super sour HEAVY boobs, I had 'implanation' spotting (atleast that is what I was convinced it was...lol) I was extremely tired, I was late for af...8 days bfn...tear***Anyways to cut a long story short I hope you get a bfp really soon. I really think you should start temping if you haven't already, I'm on my first month...fertilityfriend.com will be your best friend.

  • I would say that the best advice, in my opinion, would be to read Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It will help you understand why you may not have regular cycles when not on BC.  It's incredibly informative.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know what your experience will be.  I wish it were possible.  If you've gone off BC for that long before with no regularity, its possible theres an underlying issue-like PCOS, which many women on here have, and is generally manageable.

Also, charting!  Thats the only way to know if you're ovulating, etc.

  • I think it's best if you get to your OBGYN and ask these questions. You have specific concerns that internet strangers can not help you with. Good luck.

Also pick up a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility and check out Fertility Friend online (you can click on it in my siggy) and make an account. Temping and charting are your best ways to really know if your body is ovulating which is the only way you can get preg besides IUI and IVF. Good luck!

  • Ditto the previous posters rec on Fertility Friend.  Super easy, and helpful.  You can sign up by clicking on most poster's charts, including mine, and it's free.
  • welcome and GL... every woman is different.  I am similar to you... I"m nearly 5'5" and used to weight around 115... I gained about 5lbs on purpose because I was worried about that too.  I'm on my 6th cycle trying with no luck.  I have been regular on and off bc for my whole life, though.

  • I believe it's harder to BE pg when your petite. I'm very tall so my balance was good and my belly didn't stick out horribly. I've never been regular so it's all about charting and learning how your body operates.

And try not to worry... It's not difficult until it is.

    Good Luck!

  • I agree with all the PP. :) I didn't go on BCP until a month before I got married (Nov 2007) and was on it for 2 years.  I had extremely irregular periods before BCP, and never kept track of them b/c they weren't really a problem and I knew I wasn't pregnant b/c I never had sex before marriage.  I was worried after getting of BCP that my periods would still be super irregular and it'd be really hard to get pregnant. I started charting in Feb and it's now one of my favorite things. I love knowing what's going on with my body. My last cycle was the first real time to do it full out (the cycle before would have been, but my temps were messed up with traveling and such).  I was worried before that I wouldn't O b/c of my irregular cycles and b/c I don't produce very much CM. Last cycle, because I chart, I was able to actually see that I do, in fact, O and now I'm not worried. It'll happen when it happens for us.  This is cycle number 2 of TTC for us.  Good Luck.

Read Taking Control of Your Fertility! It's awesome! (My husband is very mature about it, but freaked a little when the first thing he opened it to was the pictures. lol.)

  • Well, I'm 5'2" and 102lbs and have 3 kids under the age of 5, so I don't think your size is anything to be concerned about.  When they say women in our weight range have a hard time conceiving, they mean women who are considered to be underweight based on their BMI.  100lbs is acceptable for someone 5'3", but NOT for someone who is 5'7"

And as for your irregular spotting, I can also relate to that.  I have 30 day cycles, but my bleeding is not textbook at all: I have my period on about days 1-6, spot occasionally from days 7-14, and then again from about day 25-30.  I do, however, ovulate regularly each cycle, so spotting frequently does not necessarily mean you have fertility issues (although it IS super obnoxious).

Even though you are just going to let things happen whenever they happen, I would still defnitely recommend charting for a few cycles just to make sure you are ovulating and everything is "operational".  At least that way you know for sure and you can just relax and let nature take it's course without stressing over it.

  • I've seen clinically obese girls get KU without much of a problem, and I've seen super thin girls get KU without a problem. I don't think that 5'3" and 100lbs is underweight (given your body structure. I mean, I'm 5'7 and used to be 110 lbs [sigh, before the introduction of Wawa by DH, it ruined me) and was perfectly healthy because I have a very small thin frame naturally. As long as you're getting adequate nutrition I really don't think that you need to be concerned about your size/weight in terms of conception. I don't see why it would be a problem

Before I went on BC I didn't have regular periods, either. They would be heavy one month and light the next and cycles were always crazy different. I don't know if they'll be any better now that I'm off BC, but I guess time will tell. Our bodies are funny sometimes.

Have you spoken with your doctor? I think that he/she would be able to better address your concerns than internet strangers would, especially since this is a clinical question and not everyone's body works the same. If you are that worried about it perhaps they can set you up an appointment for an exam to make sure that everything looks good. That's really your best bet.

    Good luck!

  • Wow, thank you everyone for giving your input! This is very helpful information. You are all right, too. I was already planning on going to my GYN soon to do a general check up and to have her answer all of my questions. I guess I won't know if it's going to be hard until I start trying. I just get so anxious and want to know what's going to happen which I totally have to let go of. Thanks everyone! Hopefully I'll be talking to more of you soon!
