Bumpers--when do you actually put them back in?

We are using the breathable bumpers right now b/c I know you're not supposed to use the "real" bumpers b/c they are a suffucation hazard.  I wasn't sure when you actually start using them, is it when LO can roll both ways or do you have to wait until a specific age?

If anyone knows, please post!  Thanks!

  • I used the regular bumper with both of my LO's since day one. There is no specific age to begin using one.

  • I figure after 6 months I'll put ours back on. We have a breathable bumper on now, but I swear he slept better with his normal bumper because it kept out light:) I believe it's after 6 months is when the risk of SIDS goes down (don't quote me on that though).
  • Like PP's have said, I don't think there is a specific age/time, but the risk of SIDS greatly decrease after 6 months.

I don't have one on and may not ever use one. I am going to see how LO does now that she is more mobile.

  • I've recently put regular bumpers on DD's crib because she's become too facinated with looking out the slats to sleep!  This way it creates a visual block so she doesn't get overstimulated...

  • I just put ours up about 1 week ago, LO was hitting her head on the bars and her arms/legs were sticking out and DH got nervous about her breaking a bone...she is rolling and holding her head up very well so she is doing great with them.
  • I don't know about when to start using them, because we've used them since day one.  I do know that once they can pull themselves up you have to stop using them because they could use them to step on and fall out of the crib.  So if you're going to use them, it would be sometime between now and when LO can stand up.

  • We won't ever use bumpers.  Not only do they pose a suffocation risk, but they reduce the flow of fresh air, and this is what causes the increased SIDS risk.  And that doesn't matter how old LO is or what he/she is doing.  I believe in following all safe sleep practices, including no bumpers, no loose blankets (we use Halo Sleepsacks), no pillows, no soft toys, back sleeping, fan going, and offering a pacifier.
