Parenting after a Loss

sippy cup questions...

Two questions regarding sippys:

1.  How did you introduce LO to one?  I started putting it next to her a couple weeks ago when I was feeding her.  I put about an oz of water in it and tilted it up to her so she knew she could suck on it.  She sucked for a second, made a face and turned away.  I think she didn't like the water, lol.  Anyway, she seemed more interested today suddenly, but still didn't drink out of it, more like played with it.  Does this seems the way it goes?  Should I do more to get her to understand how to drink out of it?

2.  We have a couple different types - playtex, advent and tommy tippee.  The playtex ones said explicitly not to sterilize/boil.  The advent one say they should be sterilized/boiled - but the instructions looked like they were meant more for their bottles.  Did boil yours in water before using?

Re: sippy cup questions...

  • We did not boil anything because they all said not to.  All our luck has been in the nuby cups.  The spouts are soft and easy for them to drink from.  The flip and sip is awesome!

  • 1.  That's how I introduced it too.  She also just played with it (or chewed on it first).  I continued trying to offer then and one day she actually started to drink out of it.  She definitely liked the soft top ones better then the hard tops (although now it doesn't matter).

    2.  I didn't boil any of them but I did clean them first.

  • Not sure about the boiling thing, but try a bit of prune juice (or apple) to sweeten the water.  She's still pretty young though.  DS is 9 mo and he's been starting to use it for maybe a month or so.

  • I introduced it like you are introducing it, and he is just now starting to get it. :) I have the Avent ones and I actually called to make sure about the boiling and they said that yes, they should in fact be boiled. Good luck!
