Need some advice on introducing a bottle

I tried pumped BM yesterday in the Mimijimi bottle https://www.mimijumi.com/products_gallery.html and today in the Medela bottle that comes with the pump.  Both times it seems like she's getting too much milk so a quarter of it is coming out of the side of her mouth and she spits up another quarter.  Yesterday she took about an ounce and today the same.  I have two more brands of bottles to try but wanted to see if you have any advice on how best to introduce a bottle before I open up the other two brands.  Both bottles that I tried are slow flow.  Is it just practice?

Re: Need some advice on introducing a bottle

  • I use dr browns bottles.. I have an issue with feeding her a bottle though when she has my boob right next to her.. I kno it sounds crazy but I think she has an issue with it too.. so I let my husband give her a bottle. she seems to do well for him and anyone else, and then i go pump. its nice to give other people some time with her too I feel like she's always on my breast   so when she's with me she gets the breast and when my husband is home or there are other people visiting i let them feed her

  • We introduced the bottle at 2 weeks (Tommee Tippee), and she did great.  At first she wasn't used to the faster flow of the bottle, but she has adapted.  Just give her some time.  Babies have to suck differently on a bottle than on the breast, so it takes some getting used to.  She'll pick it up.  In the meantime, try letting her get just a few sucks, then maybe pull the bottle out to let her rest a bit.  The spitting up is probably due to her eating too fast because she's not used to the faster flow.

  • I use the NUK orthodontic bottle and I love it! I have the Medela one for pumping but switch when I go to feed the LO.
  • We use Dr Brown.  I have both the wide and narrow mouth bottles.  She prefers the wide I think.  During a 2 oz feeding, I'll burp her 2-4 times depending on how she is acting.  I find that she is often in need of a burp when I have trouble with the bottle.

Also, the nipple on my bottles is size 1.  You can tell the size by taking the nipple out of the bottle and reading the edge.  I found with my Medela bottles that they were often size 2 and that was why there was too much milk.
