Trouble TTC

Can't ttc without AF, right?

This is so frustrating! I began AF 6/24. I had the first appt. to consult with my gyn about ttc on 7/7.  I had a pap smear and stocked up on prenatals. Although we didn't do a whole lot of planning and tracking that first month because I was waiting on the next cycle to come around, we def "practiced" every other day...as the doctor told us to do. I'm alllllllwwwwwways on time so I was expecting AF on 7/22. When it didn't come, I got my hopes up. 8/19 will make me 4 weeks late and still neg hpt and serum hcg's. I just don't know why. I can't say that I was super stressed about trying. And I'm not usually someone who skips periods d/t stress anyway. The dr. recommended waiting a few more weeks before making an appt and said she would rather not intervene until we've tried for a solid 6 months. I don't want divine intervention (least of all, clomid!)...I just want a period. What are the basic requirements for Provera and is there anything I can do naturally to stimulate a period? Also, can I be ovulating without a period? I'd really like to start trying sometime!

  • Your doctor will not induce AF until CD60, maybe even 90. Have you just come off of BCP? It can take your body quite some time to regulate. If you are prescribed Provera, you'll POAS to make sure you aren't pregnant and then you'll take the pills for 5-10 days. AF will show up shortly after taking your last pills.

Additionally, unless you're over 35 or have a pre-existing condition, your doctor "intervening" at 6 months is unlikely and frankly, unnecessary as itcan take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive.

It's not impossible to think you haven't O'd yet this cycle so it doesn't hurt to keep "practicing" but generally, no AF= no O.

Everything she said.  If its been 60 days since your last period your ob should have no qualms about jumpstarting AF with Provera.  It can take the body quite awhile to readjust after coming off bcp.  Other things that can cause you not to get AF are undiagnosed hypothyroidism (this is what happened to me when we first ttc) and PCOS.  GL to you!

  • I have PCOS and am on Metformin 2000mg a day. I was doing really well with having regular cycles on my own and then nothing. I took Provera 10mg for 10 days and started 5 days after I finished my last pill. My Dr doesn't start you on Provera until you are at least 60 days or later. He also made me have a blood pregnancy test before he would let me start it. GL!!
  • If you were on the pill prior to this, you can't judge AF based on that because AF while taking the pill isn't real, its induced by stopping the hormones.

My guess is that you just haven't ovulated yet, AF is supposed to come 2 weeks after you ovulate, so if there is no AF, probably no ovulation yet either.  Read up on detecting ovulation, it will help clear things up.  Some cycles can be super long after the pill so this is probably nothing and things will regulate within the next cycle or so.

  • Just to answer some questions! I haven't been on the pill for over 4 years. I had a blood test that was negative...made mention of that in the original post: serum hcg's. I had my thyroid checked last year but I'm willing to get the full workup. I don't want anything to help me conceive...I just want something to jumpstart a period. My appointment is this Friday so we'll see! Thanks for all the great advice everyone!!!
