what to use in pool?

We have a life jacket which forces him on his back.  We have a float that is supposed to help him swim.  However, that forces him on his stomach which is not good (we will be saving this for when he is older!)  We also have a float he sits in.  This has been the best but now he wants a bit more freedom.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

    Is he big enough for a puddle jumper?  I just had Eli in water wings (rated for 1-3 years) until he was big enough for the puddle jumper.  He did just fine with them.

    We got a puddle jumper for John when he was two and he still uses it. The first year neither of us were very confident in the pool yet, but this summer it has been hands off and he is jumping in by himself with the puddle jumper. It has the floatation foam around his chest and on his arms so it keeps him upright and he doesn't tip forward or backwards or side to side like he did with a regular life vest. We have tried other floaties and life vests and always come back to using this one.
