Flu shot this year?

I saw a sign for flu shots today, and wanted to ask you ladies if you think you planning to get one or not. At first I thought I might get one to be on the safe side (I have an auto-immune disease and can be susceptible) - but then I read that each shot contains a lot of mercury and formaldehyde. Now, I am pretty sure that I will skip it, and take my chances this winter.

Re: Flu shot this year?

  • It's nearly impossible to walk through the doors of my OB's office and NOT get stuck with a flu shot.  They very highly recommend them for pregnant women.  I've had one with all of my pregnancies so far and plan to for this one as well.

  • I don't get flu shots, but you can request a mercury-free one if you wanted one.?
  • I believe they have a different shot for pregnant women?  EDIT: Just looked back on my records. They gave me a preservative free shot when I was pregnant with ds.

Um, I am sorry, I know I am a lurker over here, but this is not true. You CAN, in fact, die from the flu. According to the CDC, 36,000 people die from the flu each year.

Get a flu shot or don't, but don't say that you can't die from the flu.

  • I got one the year before last when I was pregnant with DS.  It was highly recommended by my OB.  Whether it was the flu shot or something else, I didn't get so much as a sniffle that winter and spring.

I'll definitely be getting one this time around.

  • My OB brought it up with me at my first appt at 6 weeks and told me he highly recommends pregnant women get the traditional and H1N1 flu shots.  So, I will.

I see Bex already responded, but I just have to also say, are you sane right now?  You most certainly CAN die from the flu, and pregnant women are in one of the highest risk categories for that to happen.

OP- yes, they make preservative free flu shots if you are concerned.  I am definitely getting the flu shot, and did get one at week 5 with my first pregnancy, and it was the thimerosol filled "toxic" one.  My OB said they recommend every woman who will be pregnant during flu season get the shot regardless of whether it is thimerosol free or not.

Grace, I  you! Good luck with everything sweetie! :goes back to lurking:

  • I am a teacher and for the last 10 years or so I've been getting a flu shot.  I will continue to do so this year as well.  I do want to talk to my OB just to see what she says about it.

  • I typically don't get one. When I first saw my RE he said that even though he is supposed to tell me to get one, it really wasn't necessary. The regular flu shot has only a few of the different strains in. It's only the CDCs best guess as to what will be the outbreaks.

Just some food for thought. Last year was the first year DH did not get the flu. It was the first year he did not get the flu shot either. I have never gotten a flu shot (in my adult life) and have never gotten the flu.

I guess I will talk to my OBGYN and she what she says.

  • This is all certainly food for thought - and I thank you all for your opinions. I will ask my doctor at my first appointment (which is Wednesday... YEA!!!), and thanks to you all, I know there is a separate option for pregnant women, should I choose to do this at all.

  • I've never had one even when I was pregnant the first time around and I have never had my daughter get one. But with your circumstances you might want to consider it especially if they have specific ones for pregnant ladies.

I don't usually, but will get it while pregnant.

This year the H1N1 will be included in the regular shot.  No need for 2.

I just heard this today as well. However, I most likely will not be getting the shot. The one and only time I got a flu shot, I got the flu. Last pregnancy I didn't get the shot and I work in a bar, handle dirty money, glasses and plates. I wash my hands a TON at work. I feel like I've covered my bases. Also, I just check DD's shot record today and the manufacturer for her H1N1 is listed as "unknown." That really bothers me.

  • Yes I will be getting the vaccine.  I didn't get the vaccine last year and had H1N1.  It was bad.  So I'm giving it a shot (no pun intended) this year.

I'm going to ask my OB before I go through with it, but if he gives me the green light (hopefully he offers it) then I'll take it.

  • The Flu Shot, not mist is recommended for women who will be giving birth during the flu season. For the first few months of their life your child has your immuinities, so by having the flu shot you are actually protecting them from getting it. All of the research I have seen Recommends that you get one if your are due during the flu season.

  • I will definitely not be getting a flu shot.  As previous posters have said they are only injecting you with one strain that is a guess and will likely do nothing for you.  I agree that yes people do die from the flu but that is typically the elderly and people with immune issues.  I know that pregnant women fall into the higher risk category but I'm going to skip on the mercury dose.
