How do "teach" to use a straw?

I am absolutely clueless!! DD took a sippy very quickly and think she can with a straw too..I just have no clue on to teach her how - DH said maybe by showing her the sucking motion facial expression (like a fish face).. I kinda giggles at that. But maybe he's on to something?!

  • I don't know how DS learned (he doesn't do regular sippy but does straw ones) but it doesn't hurt to make the fishy faces and sucking noise, plus what helped DS learn there was liquid in there is we would suck first and there would be a little taste of liquid at the top of the straw so he knew there was something down there.

  • DS just figured it out as well.  At restaurants I would give him water with the straw (by holding my finger over the top to keep water in and letting go in his mouth) - he learned to wrap his lips around the straw that way.  Then one day I let him put the straw in his mouth and he just sucked up the water!

This is what we're doing now - I'm in no hurry, was just curious if there is something specific that we should be showing her. I'm just happy she's using a sippy finally!

  • Both kids just kind of picked it up, but I've heard that putting something on top (fruit puree or juice) will encourage them to suck on it.  After a few times of getting the liquid out they start to "get it".

I've always been told that starting a straw early is a good thing because having an LO that can drink out of a straw is a convenience.  Both our LO's have been able to use straws for as long as they could use sippy cups.  This has been useful because we don't have to have a sippy cup with us all the time.

Though now DS won't use the regular sippy cups.  So it may have slightly backfired on us, but we just switched to straw cups and he's fine.

  • I got DD a straw sippy a few months ago and she didn't get it.  I just got it back out and took some drinks myself and then tipped it up a little and she got it right away.  I'm so excited, haha!
  • I used a small juice box and squeezed a little juice into his mouth with the straw.  He then got the idea that stuff would come out and clamped on, started sucking.  I have since switched to straw sippy cups and just regular straws for water.

This. Another Bumpie suggested doing this so I tried it with DS. It took him about 5 or 6 tries but he eventually got it. Now he's a pro!

  • we skipped a sippy altogether and just offered DD a straw cup. we started around 8 months, just giving it to her everyday. then around 10 months, she just started sucking, and now loves her straw cup. i would show her what to do, but i think she figured it out when she was ready.
