So far for me it has neither been painful for uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels like a little rumble or like when you're in a pool and someone swims by you. I didn't begin feeling LO until around 20ish weeks. Now you can SEE him move. It's the best!
The best thing I can compare it to is muscle spasms. If you've ever felt these, it kind of feels the same in that it's involuntary movement in your stomach.
For me, at the very beginning, it felt like nervous butterflies in your stomach. The further along I got the more it felt like pokes, jabs, and nudges.
definitely no pain. not early, anyway, I've heard it can get rather uncomfortable in 3rd tri... for me the first kicks I recognized felt like someone flicking me from the inside. a.k.a. popcorn pops I have never really had a "flutter" feeling....

Wow! This is the best way I have ever heard it explained! LIke when someone kicks the water by you really fast. Sometimes it feels like a finger just literally poking you from the inside. A girl on here said to put a paperplate on your belly when you think you feel it- and low and behold, the paper plate starts moving around! VERY cool!

I definitely had the "flutters" for a while and someone else described it best by saying it felt as if you had swallowed a goldfish, lol. I was worried I wouldn't recognize kicks for what they were but I promise, when you feel it, you'll know it. Like babiesonthebrain said, it's like little popcorn kicks.
for me it felt like butterflies, then gas (little rumbles) and now it feels like poking. It all depends on where he's kicking me, sometimes if he kicks my pelvic bone it isn't horribly comfortable, but never painful.

This is how I've always thought of early movement as well. Like a muscle twitch.

This is how I would describe it to. Sometimes it kicks over and over again and every once in a while a slight tap.
Re: What does kicking feel like?
At first it felt like vibration to me. Like a small spot would vibrate in little bursts.
Then it was the vibration followed by a light poke, I assume that was kicking.
Now I can feel distinct kicking vs. rolling, wich just feels like a ball moving under my skin.
