i used parts of the 3 day like chucking him full of liquid and sitting on the potty every 20 min or so. but we did a slower approach and worked up to the big day of no diapers, and he did great. poop was a little troublesome, but after a week or two he started telling me and not going in his underwear. we still have the occasional pee accident, but he does great and has even started waking up at night to go pee (he wears diapers at night).
oh - and don't ask them it they have to go potty - the answer will be no - every time! keep reminding them to "tell me if you have to go potty"
