Ok so i thought i had read that pre-packaged deli meats were ok to eat....and now I'm reading in other places that its not. I had 2 slices of balogna yesterday that had been pre-packaged and i didnt heat it up. I'm around 7-8 weeks and I'm wondering have I totally screwed up?
I'm trying not to be paranoid about every little thing, but i dont have my 1st appointment until next week, and when i call the docs office, its like i have to go through 3 different levels of people to get an answer.
Re: Am I totally screwed?
This. When you look at the odds of getting listeria you can make an informed decision on your own. I ate deli meats last pregnancy, but only from places I trusted. Example: I would NOT eat them from my work. Too many refrigerator issues. However, I would buy them from the grocery store deli counter.
You're definitely not "totally screwed". It's not like every piece of deli meat is contaminated with listeria or anything like that. The reason we are supposed to avoid it is because the risk of listeriosis is higher for pregnant women than the rest of the population, and if you get it, it can be fatal to mother and/or baby.
That said, the risk is still extremely low, as previous posters have pointed out.
Also, it's important to note that there are a lot of other types of foods that can be contaminated with listeria. Cold cuts seem to get the most attention, but there are a lot of other sources. The most recent one I heard about was alfalfa sprouts.
