Am I totally screwed?

Ok so i thought i had read that pre-packaged deli meats were ok to eat....and now I'm reading in other places that its not. I had 2 slices of balogna yesterday that had been pre-packaged and i didnt heat it up. I'm around 7-8 weeks and I'm wondering have I totally screwed up?

I'm trying not to be paranoid about every little thing, but i dont have my 1st appointment until next week, and when i call the docs office, its like i have to go through 3 different levels of people to get an answer.

Re: Am I totally screwed?

  • You're fine.  It's not like you ate an entire case of deli meat!  I was told it's fine to eat deli meat as long as you heat it up in the microwave.

  • The risk of listeria is 7 incidences per 1,000,000 people.  This means you have a .0007% liklihood of actually getting it.  My doctor is totally okay with eating lunch meat, and not even steamed (he himself said that would be too disgusting to even bother with...LOL).  He said he'd rather I get it from the deli counter as opposed to prepackaged, but that's because he doesn't like prepackaged anything, not because of risk.  That said, my friend's OB told her to only eat prepackaged.  They all disagree, and the fact remains that only a VERY small percentage of people get it per year.  You're FINE!

This. When you look at the odds of getting listeria you can make an informed decision on your own. I ate deli meats last pregnancy, but only from places I trusted. Example: I would NOT eat them from my work. Too many refrigerator issues. However, I would buy them from the grocery store deli counter.

  • You're definitely not "totally screwed". It's not like every piece of deli meat is contaminated with listeria or anything like that. The reason we are supposed to avoid it is because the risk of listeriosis is higher for pregnant women than the rest of the population, and if you get it, it can be fatal to mother and/or baby.

That said, the risk is still extremely low, as previous posters have pointed out.

Also, it's important to note that there are a lot of other types of foods that can be contaminated with listeria. Cold cuts seem to get the most attention, but there are a lot of other sources. The most recent one I heard about was alfalfa sprouts.

  • thanks everyone!
  • My Dr put it this way... if she told me to stay away from deli meat, she should also have me stay away from driving a car, because I'm more likely to get into a car accident that get Listeria.....  That said though- just know the food source.   If your at a picnic in 100 degree weather, or a shady resturant.... or if your preparing the food yourself and bought the meat from a trustworthy vendor......
