So basically DH has a flex spending account to pay for doctor related items (co-pays, xrays, contacts, etc.) and we have a lot left on it. If we don't spend the remaining 400 bucks by the end of year, we lose it. So we've decided that we are just going to go ahead and do the 3D/4D ultrasound. The question is, when?
Do we do it at 16 weeks and find out the gender a month early? or
Do we wait til 31 weeks (thats as far as I go without hitting the holidays) and find out what the baby looks like early?
My thought is that since we're going to find out the gender one way or another and we're taking that surprise away, I kind of want to save the baby's appearance as the surprise after birth. But I get mixed opinions, whats yours?

Re: Clickypoll: for opinions please
I've heard it on here before.. but you're such a disgusting *** kdodge.. who gives a crap if someone is excited to find out the sex? You don't sound cool with all the hostility you spew out.. i pray to god you grow some sort of feminine maternal gene
I voted, but I think that there may be other things you can use that for. Once we meet our deductible this year, DH is getting everything that has been wrong with him over the last 2 years checked out (messed up finger, sore shoulder, etc.) Is there anything your DH needs done? Or can you pay for childbirth classes or breastfeeding classes(if you want)?
Pot meet kettle
That's really awesome
Lots of people want to know the gender of their LO. I know I do and if I can find out early I will. It doesn't mean I don't have patience, or I care more about the gender of my child than it's health or I'm going to run out and buy everything pink or blue. It's one more thing to get excited about.
Why wait until your anatomy scan if you can find out at 16wks. I don't think anyone who gets an ultrasound at 16 wks who wasn't team green would say "No don't tell me the gender, I'll wait another 4 wks"
*giggle snort* Can I have one too? My opinions are usually on the unpopular side!
Oh no I wouldn't go out buying anything either, I said that in my post. I think a guess at 12 wks is the same as a guess at 16 wks but it's still exciting. There will always be people who will get that guess at 12 wks and go out shopping. Even when I do find out I don't plan on telling anyone and playing it off like I'm team green. People go way too crazy with pink and blue which make me sick. But like I said if my dr wants to make a guess at 16 wks I'll take it but I won't go out shopping or start planning my nursery, which is going to be brown and cream anyway
That is an excellent suggestion!
*does an air conditioning dance for Kdodge*
If the 3D/4D ultrasound doesn't soak up all of your leftover FSA money, you might try seeing if you can prepay for some of the hospital expenses. That way there's less you have to worry about taking care of after baby comes.
My vote was for 31 weeks because the baby will be more developed then and will look more like what they'll be when you deliver than at 16 weeks. Very cool though that you have this opportunity though!
I have the same benefit through my work and it has made paying for this pregnancy SO much easier and less stressful.

A lot of my friends have had the 3d/4d done at around 30-34 weeks, They are great, they show so many featutres and it's awesome to see how much the baby has developed.
But when the baby comes out, I don't think he/she looks anything like the 3D sono!
So I would do it at 16 weeks, I would want to know the sex ASAP!!!

I agree with kdodge that it would be silly to spend that money finding out the gender when it might not be 100% accurate at that age anyway, and you're finding out a month later... so I was going to vote for 31 weeks, but honestly my opinion is more in line with rvandiver.
First of all, the end of the year is still quite far away. What if you have an emergency between now and then? I wouldn't spend it in two weeks when you don't know what could happen in the next few months.
I also think that, even when you wait until 30+ weeks, the baby looks really warped in 3D ultrasound. My dad is an ultrasound tech and I've seen lots of these pics, including the "best" ones. They all still look pretty weird. Guaranteed, your kid will look cuter in person. I don't think it's worth spending $400 to see a pic that, let's face it, wouldn't make it into a single picture frame once the kid's actually born. ;-)
have you checked to see if this even counts as an expense that qualifies for your FSA?
I'd be willing to bet in many cases it does not, as it is not a medical procedure. It is not even in the same category as over the counter drugs and things. Before spending the money and counting on the FSA covering, I'd make sure it's eligible.
This! Our FSA is tracked by the IRS. Crazy, I know. They regularly ask for substantiation of transactions. I have to send copies of patient info., services received, when, and with receipts and statements. I have had a few purchases (like from the grocery pharmacy department) come back as non-eligible purchases and have had to pay back those charges. I would hate to find out that my ultrasound wasn't covered and was out hundreds of dollars. Also, the only thing you can really pre-pay is the pre-natal care of your entire pregnancy to your doctor.
Either way, I say wait on the ultrasound. Even at 30 something weeks, your baby will still surprise you and look cuter after birth.
