HOW do I get him to drink out of a straw?!?!?!

Any tips mama's?? We're having major meltdowns over the straw sippy (per pedi's rec to get him off the bottle)...maybe he just needs more time but is there any advice you have? TIA!

  • Get the honey bear straw cup.....only two websites sell it....works like a juice box in that when you hold it the liquid comes up. Once they " get it" with this its easy to move onto any straw/ straw cup

  • Just keep giving him straw cups, make sure they don't have valves that make it hard to suck the liquid up - test it yourself.

Then sit down with Mom and Dad and three straw cups and everyone drink from their cups.  Keep showing and trying, and he'll figure it out.

  • Hannah could drink from a straw at a really young age but it's because I'd bribe her with good stuff:)  I'd make smoothies with strawberries, bananas, vanilla yogurt, and a bit of ice in the blender.  I'd suck some up in a straw and put my finger over one end so the liquid would stay in and give her the opposite end and let her taste it.  She loves the sweet taste of the smoothie so she'd want more.  She had to suck a bit to get it out because it was a thicker consistancy than milk or water.  Every time we'd go out to dinner I'd do the same thing with my water/straw and let her try and get it out.  Eventually she wanted to do it herself.

  • I don't know but I don't think Bright started drinking from a straw until well after 1, are you sure it isn't too early?
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • don't waste money buying the honey bear cup - just go to any restaurant that gives you kid's drinks in the plastic cups with the well fitting tops and straw sticking out --- tons of places around here use those... you can squeeze them so the milk goes up into the straw and they realize what the straw is for this way - and will start sucking. All 3 of my boys learned in one sitting using these.
  • I thought that Jacob couldn't/wouldn't drink out of a straw cup until he was about 15 months old.  He was good to go with the hard spout sippies, and I was fine with sticking with those.  Then he grabbed a friend's straw cup and started sucking.

Perhaps Jake is too young.  Or perhaps another type of sippy would work better.  A hard spout is just fine, IMO!

  • I wanted to have a party when Nicholas finally drank out of a straw cup.   It took him til he was I guess about 15 months.   My friend (a Speech Pathologist) kept telling me that he really should be using straw cups in her professional opinion. One day I gave him one- after we had taken a break from them-and he just "got it".   I was like "OMG!!!!  Yay you did it!!!!"  DS probably thought I was nuts.

I guess just keep trying and one day he'll surprise you and just know what to do.

  • Here's how we did it, and it was super simple.  I had tried straw sippies a couple times and she just could not figure it out.  One day I had an idea, I just tilted her straw sippy up like a bottle and she automatically started sucking.  That was it!  After that she would hold it and knew how to suck from it and did not try to tilt the cup any.  I would say she was about 9 or 10 months old.
