Trying to Get Pregnant

NTTGP related - eharmony vs. match.com

A good friend of mine is single and having a hard time with the dating scene.  She's been set up a few times with friends of friends and nothing has panned out.  She's 41, never been married and hasn't been in a real relationship in like 5 years.  Anyway, we got talking today about online dating.  I've heard some horror stories about the freaks on match.com but never known anyone who used eharmony.  Anyone know how it compares to match.com, either from your own experience or from what others have said?

Re: NTTGP related - eharmony vs. match.com

  • SIL and HSBFF met their husbands on Match.com.

You have to weed through the crazies.

  • I  met my hubby on match.com, and I have known a few who have used eharmony that were not fans of it. They said it didn't really offer them much, but to each their own. I felt like it took so much to get through eharmony when I was deciding between the two, and that eharmony seemed to be more expensive than match. My pick is match.com, and honestly, I think you will find a few freaks on any dating site. You just have to weed them out and be smart about it. GL to your friend.

  • My sister actually met her DH on eharmony. He is an awesome guy. He was the only one she talked to and they didn't talk online for very long before meeting in person. I had my reservations about her going online for dating but I can't imagine life without my wonderful BIL

  • I met my husband through eharmony.  I had a friend on match.com and it seemed like a bit meat market.  eharmony is much more personal.  You can't just "free search" people.  You have to be paired or match in-order to communicate with anyone.

  • I met my husband on eharmony. I chose eharmony over match b/c I wasn't crazy about the fact that on match anyone can browse through and see you, like a candy shop or something.

Eharmony does have an extensive survey at the beginning, but they really do pair you with people you're compatible with. Before I met my husband, I didn't think it was even possible for me to be paired with someone that was so "right" for me.

It is a lot of work, but you really get to know the person.

That said, I got paired with a ton of nerds on eharm and the only person I went on a date with was my husband. But, you only need 1, right?

  • I signed up on match May 22, emailed Brett, chatted with him May 24, met him May 25, and knew I'd met the man I was going to marry. So match gets my vote!

  • I tried to sign up for eharmony back in the day, but apparently I did not fit any of their predefined personalities or something like that, so they wouldn't let me sign up.  I think match.com did seem a bit more casual, but you could weed through and find a few good ones.  I actually met my husband through plentyoffish, which is a free service and I had great luck with that (obviously).

  • I have a good friend and my mom (both widows) meet their now husbands on eharmony.com.  Both highly reccomend it.

From what I hear there are a higher concentration of people looking for hookups on match.com but this was several years ago (last I knew someone on both sites)  It seems match has come a long way towards trying to legitimize itself as a place to go to look for serious relationships.

  • I met DH on eHarmony in Oct. 2008; we were engaged in June 2009, and married in Oct. 2009.  I'd used Match a lot before that and found it to be too meat-markety and wide open to the public.  While eHarmony is more "private," it can be frustrating because of the guided communication stuff.  It definitely worked for me though, because DH was one of my first matches.  Good luck to your friend!

  • I'm not a hug eHarmony fan because they refuse to match same sex couples.

(After getting a lot of bad press for this policy, they created a totally separate gay dating website. Because obviously we wouldn't want the icky gay people on our straight dating website. Don't want to share bandwidth with THEM <---- please note sarcasm)
