Baby Names

Sebastian, or Titus?

These have been our favorites in daydreams pre pregnancy for about a year. These are the "someday when we have kids" names we always liked for boys. We keep discussing other boy names and then coming back to these. I have had some negative feedback on Sebastian, but my only concern is that there is really no good nn for it, and it's kind of long.

Anyway, we can't decide which one we like better. Any advice?

Also, the spelling of Titus is not set in stone. We are also considering Tidus as a spelling (though not traditional) for obvious reasons.

Re: Sebastian, or Titus?

  • What are the obvious reasons for spelling it Tidus instead?

I really don't care for either but I'd choose Sebastian over Titus. I just can't imagine a child with that name.

  • If I knew a Sebastian, I probably would call him sea bass, just for the fun of it.

Titus, I would definitely spell it with a T.

I think I like Sebastian better, though!

  • They remind me of The Little Mermaid. Although I think its Sebastian the crab and King Tritan, not Titus. Oh well, if you like you them that's all that matters! :)
  • Out of the two, I much prefer the name Sebastian!

  • I like Sebastian, it is a good saints' name.  I know a little Sebastian, I think everyone always calls him by his full name.

  • I much prefer Sebastian.

If you do go with Titus, I don't like the "d" spelling at all.

    Sadie is not impressed.

  • I like Sebastian much better. I don't understand what the obvious reason is for using a d instead of a t? The only thing I can think of is the nn Tit? lol
  • out of the two I like Sebastian

  • Sebastian.  The only reference for Titus that I have is Titus Andronicus, and that is so violent I can't get past it.  But if you do go with that, please spell it correctly.
  • One of my bffs from school has the cutest DS named Titus! He's the only one we've ever met and we think it's adorable. I know she calls him "T" for short sometimes, but mostly just Titus.
  • DH liked Titus, that was the fastest VETO that I have ever put out in my life!! Maybe it would work for you tho.
  • My stepson's name is Sebastian and he hates it becasue of the crab from The Little Mermaid.
  • I vote for Sebastian! The nn for Sebastian is Bas (https://nameberry.com/babyname/Bas).

  • I love the name Sebastian. Titus is NMS, but if you decide to use it I'd definitely spell it the traditional way. Tidus just looks odd.

Using a D might avoid other kids finding 'tit' in his name and picking on him.

Or am I thinking too much into it?

  • I love Sebastian! I considered it but agree that it's a bummer there's no good nn; I'm not wild about Sebby. ;)

I like Titus, but I do think he'd get teased, and I don't think changing the spelling is the answer.

That or the nn "Tight-ass" is the other one I've heard.

  • I love both - but agree that Sebastian is my favourite. I love Seb as a nick name though, so much be in the minority. (I also think it's a fairly common nn...)

Tidus seems an odd spelling, and you wont' get beyond the tight-ass nicknames, like OP said. Titus is a great name, but you just need to decide how much thought you're going to put into it. I mean, William could be negatively nn-ed Willy - but we still did it.

  • Yesh, maybe I'm too classic, I have a hard time with both.  If I had to pick one it would be Sebastian, however, the nickname of Bas just makes me think of the fish, bass.

  • Sebastian, 100%. I love that name.

I do not like Titus at all.

  • I like Titus a lot.  Tidus is just horrible.  Sebastian - I will always think Little Mermaid.
  • Neither are ms.  I know several Sebastian's or Sebastien's (common French Canadian name).  They all go by the nn Seb.
