Will you be a protective parent?

I got to thinking last night about just how protective I am over my daughter. It has nothing to do with germs or if she falls down I pick her up and comfort her.  I remember it being very strange to let other people hold or take care of her when she was a newborn. She was my little baby and I didn't want anyone except my hubby to hold her. Of course I let that go very quickly because I couldn't not let my family and friends share in our joy.

She's 20 months old and she's going on her first day trip out with my in laws today. She's only ever been in someone else car while we were out of town for a day.

I'm not nervous or anything. I know they'll take care of her. I think I'm finally starting to let go a bit. :(

So, are you protective over your little one or will you be when baby gets here??

Re: Will you be a protective parent?

  • I probably will be.  I have a sister 15 years younger than I am, and was mainly responsible for raising her through her first 2 1/2 years (we shared a bedroom - i did diapers, overnight bottles, baths, fed her, got her ready for daycare before i went to school, etc).  She is 11 now and I'm still hideously overprotective of her.

In terms of letting the baby go out with others - we don't have very many trustworthy people nearby - my family doesn't live near us and DH's family isn't terribly trustworthy - so I think that one will be tough.

  • I don't think I will be. I keep thinking that I probably won't want anyone else to hold him, but I think it's because I want to hold him and letting someone else will take away my time, not because I"m worried something will happen.

I think having worked with kids, I know what happens when they go to camp or to school  so I'm not overly concerned. I just want my time with him and I don't want others to take that away I guess.

That's how I felt. It wasn't about germs or getting hurt like I said. It was about her being MY baby. But, even after all the hospital and home visits from family/friends, I was still able to get plenty of time snuggling in. :)

  • I can only imagine how protective I'll be over my LO once he/she is here.  I'm already an over-protective mama to my furboy, so I'm sure that will be magnified by 1,000 with my child.

I mean, I make my BIL come over to "babysit" when we go away on vacation.  He could just as easily watch him at his house, but I feel more comfortable and safe having him home.  Weird, I know.

Plus, I am generally very protective of my family!!

As for my husband being protective ... without a DOUBT!!  If this LO is a girl ... lord help her!! lol  He's extremely protective of the women in his life, so again, I can only imagine how much more he'll be if we have a daughter.

  • DH says I will be, but I hope I won't be too bad. I am very particular about how Nick and Nina are taken care of while we're away. :)

Ditto!  I am SO over-protective of my furbabies!  My mom is the only person allowed to babysit them and she has to stay at out house!  While we were away on our honeymoon I had to call every day to check in!

I can only imagine how it is going to be when this LO comes!  My mom is already afraid to babysit!  Haha, I told her not to worry because it will not be for a very LONG time! Lol

  • I will be.  Not over-protective, though.  I was the oldest child in my family, and my mother hovered, so I realize the kind of damage that can do and will try not to be that severe.  I will be protective, though.  I have single motherhood to look forward to already (thanks, jacka$$), so I guess I'll be playing Mom and Dad.

  • DH thinks I will be just because of how protective I am with my furbabies!  We will have one of my best friends dogsit for us if we go away for the weekend and she probably has the most and best experience than anyone I know with dogs and I still call and check up on them constantly, making sure no one got out of the yard or destroyed something.  We left the dogs with my mom for 2 hours while we were at a wedding and I kept my phone next to me on the pew checking to make sure she wasn't sending me texts of something going wrong with the dogs.  I can only imagine what I'm going to be like with my child.
