How long did you TTC naturally before going for alternative methods? What's usually the 1st thing the doctor tries?
DH and I tried for 2 years with no luck. After 2 years, we ended up starting the process of getting custody of a child (which we did!). We weren't actively trying at that point, ut still didn't use any BC just in case we got lucky. Which will now put us at 3 years this October...
It's getting frustrating, especially since all of my close married friends have decided to try to get pregnant and already had their babies in the time that's passed.
So I'm starting to think about what our next steps might be. Also, if anyone can give me an idea of the costs associated with anything...my insurance doesn't cover any fertility treatments...
TIA
Re: Trouble TTC Questions
We TTC for 2 1/2 years before seeking treatment.
The first thing that should happen is testing to see what the issues are - b/w, u/s, HSG for you, SA for YH, etc.
What the treatment options are is totally dependent upon your dx. Some options are Clomid or Femara + TI or + IUI, injectables + TI or IUI, IVF, donor eggs, donor sperm. I'm sure there are other combos.
Cost is very dependent too. If you are OOP, it can depend on how many u/s you need in a cycle. For me, our IUIs with 1 u/s were $700 per cycle. IVF is $26K but that is for a shared risk program that includes 3 fresh and 3 frozen shots. A single cycle would have been around $12K.
I'm not trying to be rude here but I'm genuinely confused about your custody of a child comment. Did you foster/adopt a child?
We went to my doctor last year. They ran blood work on me that all came back normal. DH does have a lower sperm count, but I don't have any specifics. I'm going to have my annual appt. with my doctor soon and will talk to her about it again,
As for the custody thing.... I work at a school and last fall, one of the girls in 8th grade got kicked out of her house and her mom signed her over to Children Services. We started the process of taking custody in November and in May we went to court and were granted temporary custody. We plan to to go back and either adopt her or take legal custody.
We sought treatment after 2 years of TTC. DH and I are both 37 so we technically could have tried treatment after 6 months but chose not to wait.
My RE started off with all of the standard testing. SA for DH, CD3 b/w, HSG, ect. Once that all came back normal we proceeded with Clomid + IUI. We had 3 failed IUI cycles and decided to move on to IVF. We chose IVF for two reasons. We had a limited amount of insurance money so we wanted to get the most bang for our buck and my RE said I had such a good response on Clomid that I was at a high risk for HOM with injectibles + IUI.
I'm not sure of the costs OOP because I have been lucky enough to be covered with insurance.
gymnst - Thank you! But we're lucky to have her. It feels like she's always just been a part of our family.
My husband and I have been TTC between 2-2 1/2 years. I waited this long because I was scared to admit we had fertility issues and I was more focused on other things during those times. I just starting seeing a new OBGYN that specializes in infertility. He is wonderful and I have had many questions answered in the 1/2 month I have seen him. We are taking a more aggressive approach since I have been doing a whole lot of waiting while TTC.
Sorry I can't help you on the costs...I just got started. I believe that I will pay the bills not matter the cost in order to finally become a mommy.
My hubby and I were TTC for about 8 months before we tried any treatment, but I KNEW that I was not ovulating because my period would be like a month late and I had to take progesterone to make it start several times. So they did a blood test to check my thyroid, progesterone, etc. DH was supposed to get a SA but he's all backwards and was all freaked out about it, lol. Anyway, nothing was obviously wrong so my doc thinks I might have PCOS. I was on 50mg Clomid, no luck, then 100mg, no luck, then 2 rounds of 150mg Clomid and I am almost 6 wks pregnant! We also used Pre-Seed lube every time although I don't know how much that had to do with it. I had heard that Clomid thins out your cervical mucus making it harder for the sperm to travel to the egg, so it was just a precaution.
I also quit smoking about 2 months ago and DH quit back drastically at the same time so I honestly believe that has a LOT to do with our success as well.
Now I'm just praying that everything will go well with this pregnancy...I don't wanna wait another YEAR for the next one!
We sought treatment after ttc after 1 year. We went to a Re three months later because I was not getting any answers. Our insurance covered only $1500 for diagnostic treatment, everything else has been OOP. It is very expensive at one point I was working 2 jobs to cover the costs.
I think you are amazing for bringing in that girl. She is very lucky to have you and your DH
