Natural Birth

Did you have a water birth? come in!

Hi ladies,

I have kind of a TMI question...If you're in the water and pushing, how do they handle if it you poop?  I assume you have to get out and that's the end of the water? This may be a real novice question, but I'm just wondering since I'm considering water birth:)

  • I didn't poop in mine, but they just scoop it out with a little net (like the kind you use for goldfish at the pet store). At least, that's how they planned on it for my home birth. I don't know if the hospital would have had a different policy.

I had both kids at a birth center, and they told me the same thing. Luckily I didnt need it tho :)

i bought a net in case but my MW had one already (exactly what you'd use for a fishtank).  it was used but i was so focused on birthing i didn't really care.  didn't have to get out of the tub.  i had my waterbirth in a hospital.

  • I'm both cracking up and slightly nervous about the fish net. My poop is ALWAYS runny, and it has been since I was a little girl. They'll need more than a fish net for me Smile I'm not sure what BP is using to skim oil off the surface of the ocean, but I think I might need to get whatever they have.

  • Great one (just above!!)
  • I am pretty sure the net came out during mine, but I pretended I didn't notice...and almost convinced myself it wasn't happening. :)

  • I've had 2 births (one water) and I found that when you go into labor naturally one of the first things my body did was have me poop and I pretty much had soft stools and emptied myself (I know that's TMI).  Appartently, there is a hormone that causes this and its all "nature's course".  But the good thing was because of that, I didn't poop in the water (and I ate during labor).  I know it seems like every person is worried about this but truly its not a big deal.  I had this question to my midwife and she said when her patient's poop she just uses a fish net and tosses it out and most of the times the mother has no clue it happened.  No need to empty the water.
  • I too got the urge in early labor, so there was very little left by the time I was pushing. But really, it's so common and unavoidable that there's no reason to fear the pooping. Your midwife won't care at all, and you'll be leaking amniotic fluid, etc. anyway - you can't avoid making a mess!

If it's not very solid (not fish-netable), they will probably make you get out of the tub and refill it. I've heard of some people being so nervous about pooping that they give themselves an enema or something beforehand -- from what my birth instructor told me, that only makes things worse.

This. I was told to buy a medium-sized fish net from a pet store. Luckily I didn't need it! :P
